Well today I was mowing with the 175D and I lost my steering and then realized the mower was in the dirt. Stopped to take a look and the shaft to the front pump was not turning....so I loaded it up on the trailer, hauled it home and finished up with the 170D. Tonight I took a look at the one off of my parts 170 and see someone had welded the coupler solid to the shaft. Obviously a weak point of the hydraulic system. I'm wondering if I should just weld this one together.....or will it put stress on the crank or front bearing and seal? The front seal was a leaker on my parts 170, wonder if the welded up shaft might have been a cause? Also does anyone know where you can find a shaft for these, I am assuming the splines on the shaft are gone.... ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

That happened to our 1977 175 some years ago. I think we got a machinist to fabricate a new one for us. Can't remember that long ago! |

I'm thinking of taking the welded one and cutting it in half and adding a Lovejoy coupling with the rubber spider .....wonder if it would last? Problem is it is probably a 4 hour job to change them out...think the sheet metal and radiator have to come off.... ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

I would think a lovejoy coupling would work Eldon. It might be better to spend 4 hours on that than to shake the front seal out with the welded one.

| There is a AC Bulletin regarding the close tolerance on the pump alignment, be sure you don't get things running out of alignment or you may be kissing the pump goodbye. |

Wow it only took me an hour to get it apart...just took the air cleaner out and removed the sheetmetal cover above the chain coupling and got that off, then removed the cover above the axle and got to the bolts on the flange. Bad news is the flange and shaft are both worn out....guess I will go see what I can find in town.... ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

First place I stopped had a splined collar for $11....I bought it. My buddy is machining a pilot id in it and then welding it to the old flange. Fortunately there was an inch of extra spline machined into the shaft....should be good for another 35 years. ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

The flange that bolts to the crank pulley was around $650 and just the shaft that goes in it was around $150....I just remember adding them up to $800 in my head and thinking there has to be a cheaper fix! Parts guy was even stunned.... ------------- ALLIS EXPRESS! This year: |

You could have that whole outfit made from scratch for $100. How will we ever survive without AGCO parts support for Allis Chalmers.
