I need help understanding how the horizontal shaft through the bevel gear housing keeps the two bevel gears engaged. I assembled the horizontal bevel gear shaft into the housing according to the parts illustration. My horizontal (lateral) shaft moves left to right about 1/4 inch resulting is
Disengagement of the bevel gears. I can't figure out (see attached illustration) how the bevel gears are kept together (engaged). The illustration shows shims are be installed (as needed) to keep the gears engaged. The illustration doesn't seem to keep the gears pushed together all the time.

Without being able to see it, I think you need to install the pulley and tighten the nut. Then shim as necessary.

As little marv said you have to install pulleys and tighten nut to check. Will take a few try's to get it correct. Engineers should have made designed it better!
