Have a new-to-me CA. Left side final drive is very noisy and both left and right final drives are leaking oil. Will be pulling it down soon.
Noise present even when rolling and the tranny in neutral. With a heavy weight on the lift and traveling on a dirt road, the presence and pitch of the noise changes as a function of the load on the rear wheels. I am fairly sure it is isolated to the left side final drive. Tractor seems fine otherwise.
I have the AC service manual with the exploded diagram. Any tips or tricks I should know about before tackling this (?) What should I look for, specifically (?) Is there a procedure for preloading the bearings correctly (?)

You saying it changes with the load makes me think a bearing is shot

Chris, If you pull that inner hub cap, you can at least look at that bearing and get an idea of that bearing's condition. The wheel we pulled off that side was really oil soaked, so the hub seal should probably be replaced. While you're there, the inner and outer bearings might as well be replaced. At least it's on the non-clutch side. Pulling a final drive isn't that tough. Sorry about the problem. Steve

look for heavy pitting on the outer race of the bearings, and worn rollers against the bearing race... probably several thousands clearance due to wear... dirt and old oil take their toll on bearings.
