Went to jump start 8n ford today with a dead battery had the dead one disconnected so not to blow it up and then as was talked about on the forum I jumped right to the starter with 12 volt turned over good but didn't start. Had run the tractor last year with the dead battery. So then check for spark no spark, filed and set points what a pain on 8n with front mount distributor, finally jumped started it on the starter relay and it started, thinking that by trying to start it direct to the starter there was no voltage in the rest of the system to make a spark.

Your right there. With distributer ignition, you've got to have voltage to coil to get any fire. Glad you  figured it out.
