I'm talking with a fellow about having my WD45 air cleaner "boiled" in the tank at his radiator shop. He says that he can do it as long as there's no aluminium in it - it gets eaten by the caustic solution.
I believe that it's all steel, some stainless and some not.
Does anyone know if there's any aluminium in those air cleaners?

Thanks, Brian - I mentioned stainless as the grate appears shinier than ordinary steel, but that is just a guess on my part. ------------- WC, CA, D14, WD45 |

Brian, was the grate under the wire mesh on yours rusty, too? I have no idea whether the mesh in mine is rusty - can't see inside there because of the crud build-up. ------------- WC, CA, D14, WD45 |

Mine had some rust on it, but the biggest problem was the air stack and exhaust had been bent back so the grate was already loose from the center tube. Wasn't hard at all to get it out, clean the mesh, and put it back. The pics of your air cleaner was the way mine looked up through the center. My cup had a small spot rusted through that I was able to just weld up. Okay - here is the air cleaner before its visit to the radiator shop:
 The fellow at the radiator shop gave it a bath with degreaser to take off the worst of that layer you can see, then stuck it in a caustic solution bath for 2 hours at 200*. Let it soak overnight, then power washed it - said lots of black gunk came out! Finally he back-flushed it through the air outlet pipe, and the water ran clear. So here is the cleaner after its bath (and a coat of primer):
 As you can see, the wire mesh is squeaky clean! I wonder if the mesh is either plated or stainless as it didn't rust at all. After I patch the small hole where the manifold snuggled up against the air cleaner, it should be good to go.
BTW, the cost for the bath was an hour at Bill's shop rate.

Excellent! Thanks for posting the results Dave. It does look squaeky clean, and without all of the head aches of what to do with dirty solvent and crud at home. I know where I will be taking mine in a few weeks!
