After getting my 720 last Fall, working on it a bit this Spring and Summer, I'm finally using it quite a bit, primarily to pull a lawn trailer around to haul firewood, pick up sticks and leaves in the lawn and simply just for S's & giggles. Really fun to drive around and use. However, it really seems to eat up the gas. Anyone else notice this? Is this normal? Thanks, Dave

I've had one or more 720s for about 9 or 10 years now. I've learned that you "don't leave home without the gas can". Yes they are hard on fuel. Den

ok, that confirms what I'm finding out. sure do like the little devil though. has turned into a very handy addition around the acreage

Yep, sure like the tractor, but sure does use a lot of gas. It's worth it to me, tho.

Yup...mine may be the worst guzzler I've had, of any lawn & garden equipment.

This is an engine designed a long, long time ago when fuel consumption was not nearly the concern it is today. Having said that, its a good engine, good torque, good worker. Its not worth it to me to do a engine swap. If the onan pops, then I would change it. Until then, keep the gas can handy lol, Trev.

I have 2 of them and like everyone else said they can be thirsty little fellows if your using wide open throttle to mow or other attachments that require that kind of rpm. But, they are just the handiest little tractor. Built extremly well with a few short comings,,,no power steering. It does a great job with my belly mower, rear tiller, front snow thrower and my Danco bush hog. Really like them both. One has turf tires and one the flotation industrial tires. Onans are expensive to repair, parts outrages, but when they run well you can't beat them for what they were in 1976 as mine are.

I have an AC-720 with a 20-hp ONAN CCKB engine. It is a serious gas hog; but I also have a Simplicity 4040 with a 16-hp ONAN CCKA engine. The CCKA is far better regarding fuel economy and there is little, if any, difference in power/perfomrance between the two tractors.

Was there ever a high efficiency flat head engine?

There is a kit to mate a Honda engine on the 720's. Probably much better power and fuel consumption. Nothing like an Onan when they run well. Will be a last resort to replace it, I will be happy just to add more gas to the tank.
