Will I have any problems if I try to jump start a tractor with 6 volt system/8 volt battery using my pickup which is 12 volt. I realize that the tractor is positive ground.

I have done it before, Dont matter if it is positive ground or negative ground Just match the +/- up on the battery to battery. make sure lights are off. there is a slight chance of burning the points though. ------------- Unless your are the lead horse the scenery never changes!! |

Boy, I certainly wouldn't do it for long. Realize, that if your original battery is a 6v unit, when you crank it, voltage will drop to around 4.5v... and you'll be connecting a 13.8v supply across it... the differential being 9.3v... that'll put lots of current flow between the batteries. it will work, but risks an explosion. Also puts your pickup at risk of damage, so be extra careful. |

| What about taking a cable off the pickup post before hooking it to the tractor? This wouls isolate the truck from any problems. When you get the tractor running rehook the pickup cable. |

I've done it but leave the jumping vehicle shut off.

Put the tractor in neutral turn on the key, place one cable on the starter stud. Then ground the other cable to the frame. The starter doesn't care if it is 6 or 12v. I have not tried this but it comes from another forum and should work. Just don't run the starter for a long time. Good Luck Mike ------------- Everything is impossible until someone does it! If you have to do it, that is the best way. Try to stay off the stud threads of course. Keeps from burning out the truck alternator or popping a battery. They make a mess when that happens, and not the fun kind.

I used to do it all the time with my CA until I found out about the heavier cable requirement for 6V. Just match polarity and make the last connection away from the battery. I never had the pickup running, never needed to. Simply take the tractor terminal connections off the 6/8 volt battery and attach the jump leads to them. By doing this you will not involve the 6/8 volt battery with the 12 volt current from your pickup truck. When the engine starts, detach the jump leads and reconnect the 6/8 volt battery to the tractor. Make sense, doesn't it?

I ended up putting a 12 volt battery in it and a 12 volt coil and disconnected the genny. Got it to start and now it runs good.
