How many shims should the hand clutch have? the one we have only has one, and you have to hold the leaver back, it has good snap when you disengage it the first few times then it looses its snap and it seams when you pull the leaver back it doesn't "cam over" center
and snap in. any thanks for any help Tom..........ps it doesn't slip it just wont stay engaged after its warmed up.

It should have enough shims the you can stick a .040" feeler gauge between the clutch disk when its disengaged. if your down to the one thick base shim your clutch disks are wore out. I don't rember what the thickness of the thick base shim is. You have to remove shims to tighten the clutch.

If it don't stay engaged, the overcenter plate needs turned or replaced. MACK

When you have the cover plate off look close at the bronse ring that clamps around the throw out bearing on the over center plate. it has pins on each side that engage the clutch fork and moves the bearing on the over center plate back and forth. on a tractor that sits and runs a lot with the hand clutch disengaged it wears out the lip and it will not over center the clutch properly. its a split circle with a groove that captures the throw out bearing. I had to split the tractor to change mine. Once the clutch is over centered it should stay locked until you disengage it. but of you don't get it past the locked point you have to maintain pressure to engage the clutch.
