So I've been powering a sawmill for quite few years at my local show with my Allis E-60 power unit. The safety issues have been concerning me more and more because I can't be standing right next to it constantly if it would need to be shut down in a hurry. So I had a brainstorm a few months back about installing a remote shut off on it....the type that a person would use on a snowmobile or atv for young riders. Question is this: the switch I bought is only good for ten amps. When the mag is grounded, is there negative current that could potentially damage the switch? Can a multi meter be used to measure and ground the mag to test? Thanks in advance for any input. |

| think those atv type of switches would be open when pulled apart instead of closed but the concept is good just need some kind of switch that would close when pulled by a cord or rope stung along the line. dont think amps woul be any issue. |

| Forgot to mention that this switch is electric, 6 volt with 4 AA batteries. Has a wireless remote. Can be wired for normally open or closed position. Thanks again! |

Don't know if I would trust a wireless remote switch for emergency shut down but with a 10 amp rating it should handle the job.

I wouldn't use a wireless switch. Put a hard wired emergency mushroom head switch at the operator position and anywhere else it might be needed. |

| One thought for an emergency shutdown switch that could easily be moved is to get the breakaway switch for the electric brakes on a trailer. Mount the switch on the power unit and have a long cable attached so that you can pull the cable and ground the magneto. Just need to make sure the switch is inline enough to allow you to pull the plunger out. You could potentially put a small pulley on the cable that is mounted to the power unit to give you more of a degree of movement and retain the ability to pull it. Then the cable can potentially be ran as a "lifeline" (one end connected to the kill switch, and one end on a solid anchor with the cable pulled reasonably snug to allow a pull on the cable to shut the engine down) and anyone on the equipment could shut the engine down in an emergency. |
