looks like a 14 to me, twin air cleaners,  dash and manual steering clutch release similar to HD10.  15 or 16 would have hydraulic assist steering and looks like a detroit muffler on left side of engine.

back of tractor gives it away as a 14.

Thanks Cal! thought it was a hd-14 due to the levers/cab and the stacks as well as the bit of engine cowling.rear winch confused me also. been in a field forever i'm told. how do those detroits hold up with "Sealed" under valve cover injector systems but open ports on the two stoke. looks like exhaust was capped at least. two more photos, seems like someone wanted it to be a 16 though with the stickers that say "16" on it I guess lol. a bit odd.

I guess you could cut down the tree and count the rings to get some idea of how long it has been sitting in the same spot.  Looks like it might be worth trying to get running if you have the time.

nice thing about those is detroit parts are still readily available.  53-62 buda/lanova and early direct inject engine parts are not,  but the hydraulic steering and gate less shift pattern of the latters is easier to run.

Thanks Cal, I guess he got a bit of interest in it and hooked a battery but the engine is stuck. not surprising, I have done a few engines and some stuck ones were because of lower hour tight fitting pistons and years of sitting.some pitting and etched half moon rust rings in the bore and they still fired ok. not even using oil. guessing because piston fitting was still tight, ring fit good, etc.. but they were not 2 strokes. how would you check something like that , some sort of cover ports like a 2 stroke outboard, which btw 2 stroke outboards at least don't do well with anything not fitting perfectly sealed and good compression due to blowby scavenging losses. seen engines that I thought, no way would this scary looking pitted thing run right, honed, and did ok. todays tolerances microns, mine, a dimes worth lol
