HD4 Dozer Serial #1297 is having issues turning. It only turns one way and not real well that one way. Any help would be great! Finally have all the fluid leaks and now I would really like to be able to use the Dozer.

sounds like the brake bands need adjusted. there is a center cap in the middle of the top cover of each final drive. remove the cap and you will find a threaded rod with two 3/4 nuts. loosed the top one and tighten the bottom one until you get a firm brake pedal at the half way collapsed point tighten the top nut back and try it out. if there are no more threads on on the rod the band will need replaced. let us know what you find.

Can be brakes band or the clutch itself - does that track drive under load ?

Are both tracks working as they should - what happens when you pull clutch for each side without applying brake ?

Could be grease or oil on brake band -

are the plugs in case drains in or out ? is the inside of the cases clean or wet or oily ?

Tracks drive normal under load pushes great.
When I pull the clutch levers one side it tries to turn just not much and the other side won't do anything.
I will have to check the plugs and the inside of the case to see if they are in or out clean, wet, or oily.

Engage master clutch. Disengage both steering clutches. If the machine moves, the track that is driving has a frozen steering clutch.

The H4 has steering clutches that connect your final drives to the rear end. I don't think when you push the pedal it will release them all the way but will release enough to allow them to slip. That where your brake arms comes into play. When pulling the brake arm it pulls down a brake band on the outside of the steering clutch holding it back from turning. There is an adjust like randall said for them. Theres also and adjustment for you steering clutches. Its the large round bolt sticking out from the front side of the rear housing with the large nut on it. If you have a problem with the steering clutch you can put your machine against a tree , push both pedals down and engage. It might release enough to clean it up. never have done it myself but others has said it can help. But if it pushes fine then I would agree with Randall your issue is probably your steering brake pads out of adjustment or linkage froze up. hope this helps

HD4 / H4 - are manual clutch (levers) and brake pedal for brake band on each side on foot pedal operation , clutch is pulled to stop power to that side track - stabbing or pressure on brake pedal will cause machine to turn in that direction by allowing other track to turn machine under power .

IF you pull back on both levers - machine should stop moving -

applying the brake without using hand clutch lever will do NOTHING except wear out brake band .

As machine has torque converter - there is no master clutch - 3 speed transmission and the lever on left side of operators seat is fwd/ rev - and neutral hyd control for the clutch pack that is after torque converter .

This is where decelerator pedal is nice as it allows SMOOTH application of clutch pack without excess load on final drives and jerking full power applications.

Now 653 / 655 machines use foot pedals as both clutch and brake for the tracks .

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. It is been raining and I haven't been been able to get down to do any research! Hopefully this weekend it'll stay dry so I can get some testing done.
