Fly wheel locks up when freezing temps out. Runs OK when not freezing out. Cap on exhaust pipe. Where could water be getting in?

I would more suspect a valve hanging in a guide or a rocker arm trying to seize in the cold, will stop one solid.   These are torque converter tractors?  Could also be water in the converter housing if is.

Thanks for the tip. Next week is going to get above freezing so I may see if it unlocks by itself again before I inspect the valves.

Pull the plugs and see if the engine rolls.

Potential head gasket leak into cylinder(s)?  What color is the exhaust when it is running?

Internal combustion engine compresses and ignites vapor - cannot compress liquid or watering entering combustion chamber.

Before tinkering with Valves, pull the valve cover, observe the rockers while the engine is rolled over by hand.  See if any of the valves are hanging in the valve guide.

Good Luck...Orangeman

Yesterday was a high of +31. Warmed the block above freezing. Took tappet cover off and could move all the valves a little. ( none stuck) still could only move the flywheel 1\8 back and forward. Bumped it with the starter and it came free. Ran it for 45 minutes pushing snow.carb has issues. This morning the engine is stuck again???.

Engines generally do not freeze then unfreeze, I am leaning to water inside somewhere rocking up when cold.

After pushing snow I drove it up on planks and blocked the clutch disingauged. I will drop the belly skid plate and get a look in the clutch adjusting port. When I got this unit it had sat for years and mice filled the flywheel housing with all of what they do in their nests. Took days to free the clutch plate from the spline. I'll report what I may find. Don't have a heated place to work so l'll pick warm days.( +20's F)

Got the skid plate down and removed the clutch adjusting plug. About 3/8inch of ice in the bottom. Took a propane torch to it and it freed right up. I had parked it with the nose down a little which didn't help any. Now I have the nose up about 5 degrees got most of the water out. Thanks so much for all the great tips. Now I can use it and work on the carburetor problem. Acts like the float hangs up at times.
