With 6 720s around here, all with Onan engines, all old Onan engines, there has to be troubles.  I have one in particular that is giving me fits and so I'm thinking about replacing it with a kit from the Small engine Warehouse.  Im happy with the package, etc but what I am wondering is what I am doing to the value of my 720.
I know if it does not run, it has lost a lot of value.  The question is, with a new Vanguard engine in it (23 horse), will it increase, decrease or keep the value the same. 
Just wondering what you think.

I bought one with the Vanguard engine in it. It also has a 700 loader on it. I would to find a back-hoe to go on it.

Sorry but I don't really know. Usually things with original parts are worth more than modified. Six? If you have a polished 720 collection in your private museum, I would keep them original.

However, I suspect you actually mow and use some of the machines. Take one and do the re-power. Make it your everyday workhorse. See how you like it, and please report back to us someday.

Personally, I wouldn't think it wouldn't loose any value even with the Vangard engine in it. As a matter of fact, (and again this is just my personal opinion whatever its worth,) if I came across a 620/720 with a Vangard in it, that would encourage me to purchase it. Why? Cause its a more reliable engine, parts readily available for it, and more than likely trouble free for years to come! Especially if yer' gonna use it. Upgrades in that case in my opinion are the good ones! You could probably buy two Vangards for what you would have in one Onan. Not to mention the "hair pullin'" that comes along with it for parts and the parts cost....  JMHO.

If you want to use the tractor, I would recommend you put in the Briggs.  I changed mine about two years ago and I am very happy with it.  I did use the small engine warehouse kit and it went in without too much trouble.  It is a very tight fit.

Den, suggest saving (and properly storing) original motor. Shield this motor and properly label to insure its remaining intact.  Don't burn any bridges when installing any new motor. This enables you, or any new owner, to have a working 720, or go back to original motor. Herb(GA)

i would with what all the last three post s said being a briggs dealer here we fabed our own mounts and ordered the engine and pto clucthes we needed       but customer said that that was the best money he had ever spent on that 720   I spent almost 3/4  of the way to a new vangaurd  just patching up my cckb

I can't see how it would hurt the price. How do you sell something that you can't hardly get parts for. With the engine swap you have new engine with a warrany and you can buy parts for it.

The value of the machine as a collectors item would decrease as it is no longer the way it left the factory. However, as a usable tractor the value would probably not drop too much. 
Personally, it depends what you want to do with it and how long you intend on keeping it.  Seeing that you have several others that could pick up the slack, you could keep it as a museum piece.
Just throwing ideas out there.

Just wondering if you pulled the trigger or not on a new kit? If so, how do you like it? Also, there's a feller on here that has a Honda kit for sale outta his 720. Just a thought...

I just noticed that the Simplicity Powrmax's fuel cap/gage protrudes through its hood. The Allis 720 does not. Does that mean the hood of the
720 is taller, or is the fuel tank lower or shorter neck. Any implications for space to do a repower swap on the Simplicity?

I pulled the trigger on the purchase...have not installed it yet as it is a little way down the to do list.
Looked at the kit and my mechanic said it looked pretty complete.  We will see in the near future.
The Honda kit came up for sale the day after I ordered my new kit.

Lots of great points here.  I would keep the original, to include with a sale should you ever decide to go that route.  But, I think you are helping the value more than anything.  I find repowered powermax machines as more desirable, personally.  These aren't rare tractors, and unless it was a specific, notable machine (first/last off the line, government issue, grandad's old mower, etc), I'd keep it going reliably versus making it an obsolete money pit.  (wow, that kinda sounds harsh...but I own several 'money pits'!)
