| My second cousin was the last blacksmith in our town. I remember going there when I was a kid in the sixties. He still had a shop right off Main street in town. He sharpened plow points with his forge and hammers and shod lots of horses and mules too. The wood shavings were thick on the floor where he had made plow handles and things from wood. He had a hand operated blower and he would let me warm up the coals for him. In the early sixties here there were still a lot of farmers and loggers that used horses and mules.JP |

There is a blacksmith shop in Marshall County Iowa in just slightly better shape. It was closed in 1940 when the proprietor died and donated to the state historical society some 30 years later with the provision that they keep it the way it was. So not a particle of dust has been moved, nor any rust removed. Its open every afternoon Memorial day to Labor Day, but the attendants know noting about a blacksmith shop. Look up the Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop at Haverhill, IA. There is a more modern blacksmith ship, part of the museum at Dows, Iowa that is clean and neat and has more tools than the one at Haverhill. Its just across the street from the museum and vistor center in the old RR depot. A few miles west of I-35 but well marked. Gerald J. |
