If I was going to purchase a set of real M&W SP-46 pistons and sleeves, I'd be using them with a 4 1/2" stroke crankshaft for a Pulling engine. So, if there's any ring edge groove whatsoever in the sleeves.....they are worth not too much. Then, I assume one would have to buy a new set of rings, so that might be $120 bucks for them ??

thats what i want to use them for. there were some on ebay just the pistons and rods with no sleeves. they ended up selling for $285.

Nick, I was watching the same set of pistons on Ebay. As a matter of fact, I was the first bidder on them. Here is my thinking on them (right or wrong!).

I'm sure the M&W pistons are better (power wise) than aftermarket flat top pistons BUT the M&W pistons are used (and we don't have any way of knowing how used they are!). You still have to buy a set of gaskets, rings and a set of rod bearings. If your sleeves are good, you can probably get away with honing the sleeves, but I worry about putting M&W pistons in old sleeves since the wrist pin placement is slightly different. If the rings end up higher (or lower) in the sleeve, the wear on the old sleeves could become a problem with different pistons.

Rather than invest close to $300 (plus shipping )in a set of used pistons, I, personally, would rather invest Around $450 http://www.ebay.com/itm/W-W25-WC-WD-New-Allis-Chalmers-In-Frame-Engine-Overhaul-Kit-201-Eng-Bearings-/321412784033?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ad5b1dfa1" rel="nofollow - in a complete rebuild set like this that includes new sleeves, O rings, rod bearings, main bearings, pistons, rings and most of the gaskets needed to put it back together.

Horsepower might not be quite as high, but I bet longevity would be a lot better.

Just my 2 cents. What do you guys think?

I went to $280 on them that would of been $300 with the shipping thats as high as i was going. if i got them i would of got new rings for them and then got a kit like you re talking about. maybe tryed to sell the pistons and rings from the kit. now that i think about it it might be better to just use one of those kits with the flat top pistons and forget the m and w pistons. ill still have a good running engine that i can run on pump gas.

That's exactly my feelings on it. With a new flat top piston kit, everything is new. They aren't M&W, but it will still increase power over stock.

If you are set on M&W, have you seen the new sleeve/piston/ring kit on Ebay for a "Buy It Now" $735 (plus shipping) ? Too rich for me, but here is the link:

That should be SP-48 stamped on the inside of the piston.

Since Nick started this thread, I will step aside and give him first chance. If he doesn't want them, I am definitely interested.
