Allis folks,
This WD NFE tractor was purchased by my father in about 1950 or 1951. I think I may have the bill of sale around here for it. It had cultivators which are long gone. He had a John Deere model B for a short time prior to trading for this Allis.

I remember driving this tractor as a kid. Several things stick out in my mind about it. It rarely had a exhaust pipe, and was pretty snorty. I was given the task of dicsing with it, and Dad said don't every put your arm through the steering wheel. I did not have to go far till the old girl snapped the steering wheel out of my hands and the front tires were 90 degrees to the tractor in a instant! Also this tractor always got blower duty on the silo filler. I think it liked it! Dad used this tractor with a crude home made sprayer for the corn and oats.
Dad sold this NFE WD to his brother Jack about the time Dad got the Ford 5000. Early 70's.
Here are some shots as I purchased the tractor in the fall of 2012, and as it currently rests. Hoping I get the ambition to finish it this year.



It is about as rough as they come but was still being used when parked in about 2008.


Not a pretty site but was under cover.


Rear tires were good. Rims need repairs.


Marvel carb and replacement manifold.


fenders are toast


A quick farmers tune up, fresh gas, and a charger on the 6 volt, Started up and seems to run pretty good! Moved out of its tracks for first time in years.


Loaded and headed for home (yea that's me).


After several power washings. This tractor had a mag, my uncle converted it to a distributor.


Fenders and fender plates removed for safety:)


basking in the sun.


Did not have oil pressure, found that the vertical tube in the oil filter was missing.


I wanted to get this road worthy to take to local tractor pull. The front end needed work to repair the worn vertical key way. The WD gets to come in the garage!


New bearings and seals for the front spindles.




Seat shock was shot. ordered good used parts.


Added short stainless exhaust stack, and did a new parts tune up.


Front end gets put back together and this work corrected the shimmy.




Off to the pulls. (Grandson Mike had fun)




Throw out bronze ring broke in the hand clutch, luckily it was in the engaged position so we could use the foot clutch.


tucked in the garage I began taking it apart, cleaning and repairing items. Other projects have sidelined this work and I hope to get back at it this spring. Tractor is stripped to the castings. Final drives are out and new bearings and seals are waiting.








Grill is not good, I found a good used one to replace it.


Tank is in good shape, has been cleaned and in primer.


Dash will need some TLC as tractor will be converted to 12 volt system.




This hood ended up on the WFE WD I just completed. Not sure how that happened.:)
It needed lots of work. exhaust hole was wallowed out and the bolt holes were torched.


Pulled the inner races on the final drive bearings.


Bolts at top of final drive were rusted away and will be replaced.


This is about how it sets, (1-10-15) with a lot of clutter around it. Stiil a lot of work to do. I need to get back at this project! The goal would be to have it ready for the Mid July show.

That WD ought to look pretty good when you get her done. Its hard to get started back on project if you've been away from it for awhile, it is for me anyway, I've got one I haven't touched in close to 3 years. Keep posting pics as you go and good luck.

Appreciate the pix.  (yours looks as good as mine does now BEFORE you started) Bought an aged 1952 WD narrow front a year or so ago as I couldn't afford a WD 45 anywhere around WI.  We had an RC as our only tractor on the farm where I grew up, but I had enough of the hand brakes in my growing up years to last me the rest of my life!  LOL.

I am going to get into this one as the weather warms a little. From a percent completion its about 35%. Having done my first Allis this past year, hoping this goes a little quicker?
One of the areas that bugs me is the leak issues at just about every joint and orifice!

Those are Erie County PA high waters! We get three days warm enough you can wear them:)!

I never ran a WC with the hand brakes, but cant imagine that was any fun at all!

I am starting to tally the cost on the previous WD work, I know I really should not do that, but would like to get a idea of the depth of the pockets needed to bring one of these back from the brink.

Thats a cool serial number on your WD and easy to remember. Do you have a wide, narrow or single front end?

Still learning a lot about these WD's.They are starting to grow on me!  I have to round up the serial numbers on these tractors. Hummm, maybe I did post them on here some where? There is a listing somewhere right? Maybe on the home page?

I really did try to work on some of the same parts this summer and fall when I was doing the other WD. So I do have a little bit of a jump on things. This time last year the rear rims were not even started. They are complete now with tires re-mounted and ready for the wheels to be installed.
Trying to decide if the engine should come out for a good look at all the seals and to see how it looks? That would be the right thing to do, not that I always do the right thing in life:) Then I could do the pan gasket work and the front cover gasket as Don(MO) suggests.
Would be a great reason for me to get a HF engine stand. and get my engine hoist base back from my grandson. Yea that's a plan!

Since the fenders were gone I picked these up last summer. They needed a lot of work. I think they may be from a IB tractor they have a wider front lip than other std fenders. They are not so different that they will look strange. So for $6.50 each and a lot of work these are the ones that will go on this WD.





lots of dings, dents, rust out and rips in the edges.




Some MIG welding of patches on the fenders, Most of the edge patches came from Dads left donor fender. I even cut out the holes for the taillight and moved them to the new fender.




These have been smoothed out more and are in primer.

Also picked up this rad shell that may have been from a WC?? Was rusty and bent in the upper front, but better than the shell on Dads tractor. Still has the original screen.








This radiator shell is in primer ready for final filling and sanding work too.

Hood: Built the buck to hold it while finishing.


Added the 1/2 x 1/2 angle iron support under the hood for strength.

Hood is fairly flat and straight and in primer. Waiting for the weather to get warm to finish these.

Rim repair




Centers are cleaned and painted.


Need to clean up the eccentrics and brackets,

sugar maker,you will cherish and appreciate that tractor more than any you own.i have the wd-45 I drove home from the allis dealer in 1956 when I was a junior in high school.got it when dad got killed on the farm about 9 years ago.never left the farms since brought new.....

Thanks for saving another Allis Chalmers WD tractor.  Especially your father's.  I know these family tractors have a very special meaning. 
I always wanted the first Flat Top WC my father sold.  I did know where it was located but - much to my regret - did not follow up on it.  I still kick myself to this day.

Just out of curiousity why did they cut that one fender down like that? didnt make any sense to me. Was there a purpose to it?

 In 56 I was 4 years old:) So sorry to hear about your father. Glad you have that tractor! I am looking forward to having this family WD restored someday.
I remember hanging out at the local Allis dealer about 2 miles from us. My dad may have bought this WD from there too??
We had a 1956 WD45 WFE with power steering on the farm and it was a good running tractor.

Man that would be nice if you could find that WC flat top. ( I need to brush up on my WC's as I wouldn't know a flat top if it fell on me:))
Thanks! I wasn't to interested in this family tractor about 6 years ago. It just needed so much work. My uncle gave me a price on it and I did not bite, thought it was a little steep. When I finally did by it from his wife, I paid almost what he was asking anyway and now am very pleased that it is setting in the garage.
I was offered both of the WD45s that my Dad had also. that was 15 years ago. It was part of a family feud at that time and I really did not have the time or funds or need for them. Now I realize its not need its "want" :) Wonder if they still exist? Hummm???:)

Confused about your statement could you clarify? Which picture?
I have a lot going on in the pictures.  Any of the pieces I cut out were from a junk donor fender that was in the scrap pile. There are some WC fenders, paint not as shiny, in the pictures also, that set were restored and mounted on the WD WFE I just completed.

If it is this picture?, the notch at the front bottom is factory stamping. I saw a pair of these on a IB tractor last year. When I bought them at a local swap meet, I did not realize that they had the wider front leading edge compared to a WC or WD fender.

Maybe someone on here has the reason for the two style fenders? Bill Long?

Folks,
 Ted got me moving a little today.
I wire brushed and primed the 8 brackets from the wheel to the rim.  Also the eccentric pins and the little blocks that ride on the eccentrics.
When those get some color I should be able to assemble the wheels and rims and move those out of the garage for some much needed room around the WD.
Pulled out most of the sheet metal and blew the dust off those. Also cleaned up a little around the WD. I can almost see it again.Smile

I hate winter only because I can't get things done that I want to!
Makes the old lady.....OOPS, the little lady, happy though.  I installed a new garbage disposal and a new bathroom faucet and terlet (Archie Bunker) for her.  Now I wanna get going on my tractors! and the pole barn!

Folks,
Just a brief update as we move slowly forward;

 I think there is a WD tractor in here somewhere? I have never been known for keeping a immaculate shop and it sure shows hereEmbarrassed


After a good wire brushing, some fresh Persian Orange has been applied on the 8 brackets for the wheels to mount to the rims. These will be taken apart and never seize will be applied to the moving pins before assembly.


Rim stops for the rails. These will get some never seize on the threads and shank also.


Cam contact for the eccentric to rail


Dusty tires, 13.9-28's and rims ready for the wheels.


Outside of the stove bolt type rim bolts (Persian Orange) using the Krylon 1820 rattle cans at this point for small items. A little pricy but very convenient. Going to use the old hardware nuts, some are a quite pitted as you can see. Just have to draw the line somewhere from a cost standpoint I think. I can't do this like Steve @B&BApprove


Inside head of rim bolts are cream color (Rustoleum Antique White) to match the rim color.


It was a year ago when I took these rear tires and rusty rims off Dad's WD. Twas a project getting them unmounted, rims sandblasted, cutting the rims apart and welding in repairs and painting, new tubes installed and tires remounted. Glad I did not have to get new rubber also, that was expensive enough:) I did not do the unmounted and remount work. I had local tire shop do that. Was easier for me and they never scratched the paint.
 I do know that when I got these tire assemblies done and assembled on Jacks WD tractor, it was a major milestone in the restoration process! They are just big bulky, needed major repairs and have a lot of components to get them back together. Really glad I brought these along through at the same time I did the other two!
By the way these are not filled tires. If I was going to fill them it would be the new beet juice product after they are in place on the tractor.
With some luck I may be able to get these rear wheel/rim assemblies together and moved outside under a tarp soon. Providing some much needed work space around the tractor for some next moves.

Ok, I didn't like the looks of those old crusty 5/8 nuts either, so stopped at my favorite NAPA and got 16 new ones this morning. Found the snap "c" clips for the eccentric pins and have those assembled and ready. Will try to get some shots as the wheels come together.

I get bolts and nuts at Farm & Fleet.  They sell them by the pound there.  A LOT cheaper!  Grade 2, 5 and 8.

I did not ask NAPA if they had the clips. I had found some fairly good used ones. The last clips I got were from Sandy Lake and they were a little pricey I thought. The NAPA store is so convenient that I cant hardly afford to drive anywhere else. But I do like buying hardware by the pound at Tractor Supply too.

Not a problem! take your time. I have had way to much practice on this forum and several others too.
 If I spent more time doing things rather than talking about them I would have most of my stuff done:)
Both these WD's needed rear rim work and bearings and seals.

Folks,
 I made a run at these rear wheels for Dad's WD today. Some shots as to how I assemble them. No one ever taught me, so this is my method. Seems to work.

I tape the rail contact item into the bracket. The tape will be removed after the brackets are in place.


Wheel stops are ready. Note to self: check the holes and make sure they are not full of rust in the rails.


Add the first bracket to the wheel finger tight. Make sure the ecentric is in the unlocked position ( turned counter clockwise).


Stand the rim/tire about vertical with the rail holes at the bottom.


Install the rail stops and tighten.


I then set the wheel and first bracket in between these stops and reach through the center of the rim to install the bolts in the next bracket. (sorry my hands were full holding the wheel prior to the second bracket being installed).


After all the brackets are installed, remove the tape holding the contact metal parts in place.




All brackets in position with bolts finger tight. I tighten all four eccentrics about half way. then tighted the 8 nuts on the bracket bolts to the wheel.


Then tighten the eccentrics to full lock.
I wiped down the tires with Bleach White product just to get the dust off.
Touched up some paint issues and set them aside.




Back on the tractor.


I did find it today, and was able to raise it and attach my rear support which allows me to safely clean the castings and start inspections. Also allows me to install the new final drive bearing races, and the wheels will be able to be installed at a later date.

sugarmaker.....I noticed you had one of your rear rims split.did you turn it to a 16.9 rim or just do a repair?i have a 45 diesel puller I want to add a section to widen the rim for a 16.9 tire.how much trouble was it to break the slide bars loose? thx.....

sugarmaker.....I noticed you had one of your rear rims split.did you turn it to a 16.9 rim or just do a repair?i have a 45 diesel puller I want to add a section to widen the rim for a 16.9 tire.how much trouble was it to break the slide bars loose? thx.....

The rim was cut in half to replace one half that was rusted very bad. I did not widen the rim.
Here is one area to look for. Check the rail construction to the rim, are they welded with a bead on the rail sides or resistance welded through the rim? If welded on the outside (bead of weld) then you can carefully cut into the weld and separate them.  If the rim was built with spot welding process it is going to just about ruin that side of the rim to save the rails or the donor rim replacement. (I have not done a spot welded (resistance welded) rim repair.
You might look at D17 rims I think they are made wider, to handle your tires or combine rims might be the ticket too?

Folks,
 Pulled the old draw-bar and brackets off the WD. I have a real nice draw-bar and cradle from the parts WD that will be cleaned up at some point and mounted on this tractor. This unit does not have a snap coupler. Not much else happening since the cold weather has set in. 12 degrees right now. Stay warm out there!

Hopefully Luke figures out the picture thing because he is doing a real nice job getting that tractor looking good!

 Here are some shots as I make a little progress on Dad's WD.

I have applied some of the paint remover and let it work while puttering with other stuff. Many coats of paint on this old girl.


Removed the draft spring assembly. Had to use the torch to heat one of the areas of the transmission where a bolt would not come out. My Uncle had welded a stop on this instead of having the bent arm come up to the hydraulic pump controls, not sure why?


Opened up the rear end and cleaned it out. Looks OK to me.




Going to pull the shift tower off and check inside and then make a gasket for it. Also will tighten up the shifter slot and button at some point.


The new draw bar has been disassembled and is ready for cleaning.


Rear end cover had a big dent so that was gently worked back out and most of the paint removed.


Left brake drum looks new. Right drum has some grooves where it had been worn by the rivets during its life. But the tractor has good brake shoes on both sides so I am not going to change the right brake drum.


Removed some of the caked grease and crud from underside of the castings. All holes will be chased with a tap. Both rear chambers drained. Also cleaned both under sides of the final drive castings while down there. :)

Chris, firstly if like to say I have followed your post of your projects on here for over a year now(when I started on my grandpas wd) and love reading about your projects. Anyways since i finished the wd I just acquired a series 1 d15 and we have put a lot of work into getting it running right and fixing odds and ends but anyway I have one of the front rims off to fix the tube(thorn hole) and rust out around valve stem hole but while I had it off I figured I might as well go ahead and paint it so that whenever I decide to restore it that will be one less thing to do and it's easier to paint with tire off than on. I noticed you painted your rear centers cream and was wondering what kind/color it is and where you got it from. It looks really similar to the color I want . Keep up the hard work and hope all is good in allis land!

 The color scheme I used was Rustoleum Antique White in the centers and Rustoleum Silver metallic for the rim.
Sounds like your addicted to the orange tractors also. Thanks for following along on the WD repair/restoration too. Do you have some progress pictures of the D15? Would love to see them.
Funny you should mention front rims. That's part of what I have been working on for the last two days. I had a flat on the Working WD NFE and put on a tire/rim that was going to go to the current WD.
So yesterday and today I took the tires and had them de-mounted. The worst rim had to be patched in the valve stem hole. about the size of a dollar bill folded in half.
And the inside was very rusty. Fixed the hole, drilled a new one in another position and had the shop mount a used tire and tube on that rim to go on the working WD. At ths same time I had them demount the two good rims. I will start to clean those up and get ready for a new pair of Samson brand 6.00 x 16 gtri ribs that are on order.
Like you said one more thing out of the way.

Did spend some quality time on Dad's WD last night and put in the best used brass collar for the hand clutch added the new seal in the case for the pivot shaft, and got that back together.
Pulled off the shifter tower for some tuning.
Ordered a bunch of gaskets from Sandy Lake today. including oil pan gasket set and Hydraulic pump gaskets.
That should keep me busy for a day or two.

 Some shots not a lot of action at this time.

Front rims get some attention with paint remover. These should clean up good and be solid rims. Minimal surface rust.








Shift tower is off and will get the slop taken out of the shift lever ball slot where it engages the square pin.


Transmission gears. some rounding of the teeth.


Hand clutch collar in place.


Just a couple before engine shots. prior to diss-assembly for gasket replacement.




This WD project will take a back seat to making maple syrup soon.

Love the pics! Yer' gettin' quite a bit done there. I've been following along with your progress also. Sometimes ya just havta' replace nuts, bolts and stuff. I don't trust 70 year old bolts, nuts n' lock washers, but that's just me. LOL! I think the new bolts just add to the detail. Adds to the budget to I might add!! LOL! Are you getting any weather to work on the WF?
We have just normal Erie winter weather and I just haven't felt like doing much in the cold garage. Worked a little on the shift tower. welded up the slot in the shifter and whittled a new slot.
On a side note I did add up most of the receipts from the last tractor and I am pretty sure you can buy them cheaper than you can build them! But it is a family tractor and I had the satisfaction in doing the project and learning a lot.
Another thing is that unless you take these down to the last bolt and replace every seal and gasket they are going to leak a little:)

The weather turned pretty cold the past couple weeks round here Chris, so haven't even looked at the WF. She's blanketed over and tarped for now. I'm to much of a wiener to go outside and work. I'm in and out of the weather all day at work fixin' trucks and heavy equipment, so when I git' home at night, takes a while to git' the chill outta' these old bones! LOL! I have plenty of customer work to do in the basement shop, so I git' warmed up down there. This month is almost shot already, so one more tough cold weather, snowy month to go, and hopefully we'll be pullin' outta' this crap!  Woo Hoo! Bring on Spring!!

Ted I do need to come to Wisconsin, Never been there. But have a friend in Gillett. You any where close to there? And I am getting some 45 time aslo. A friend has 3 of them and I was helping him rework a starter last week.
After working on the WD's I can now start to see the differences between those and the 45's.
Was able to spend some quality time with the WD front rims today. Ready for tires next week.

Hey did anyone notice the two rims I was working on are not a matched pair. One had small holes in between each of the lug bolt holes. Well I really did not notice myself till they were done. So after painting yesterday, extra holes were added today to make them look a little closer.  I have to go load some pictures.

I have fat fingers had this all in and hit shift and ctrl and blew me out .
 Anyway here are some pictures.

Maybe the next time I show this shift tower it will have some primer. Must have been 6 coats of PO on this.


Hydraulic pump removed.


I have the kit with all the seals and gaskets from Sandy Lake for this pump. Plus will change the two seals on the shafts of the draft control portion.


One project today was to get the new brake springs from Sandy Lake installed.


Used a length of small chain to bring the eye through the casting.


OK its a start to the WD clean up. Some primer on the tractor!

Folks,
 Was able to get out and putter a little with the WD today. Below Zero here this morning.

I found these pieces behind the cam gear. Looks like the governor weights came apart at one time and these were left in there for the ride. Really glad I found and removed these as they could have easily destroyed the engine by getting caught in the gears! I ran the tractor like that for several hours. and I have no idea how long they had been in there. Yikes!


Crank shaft is grooved deep and will need a speedy sleeve and new seal.


Removed the plate covering the push rods and cleaned up in there. Will get new gasket.




Removed the exhaust manifold and one of the bolts broke in half. Was able to get all 6 out they will be replaced.


Oil pan removed for new gaskets. (Don stand on you head and pretend I pulled the engine:))




I have not got up in there and measured the piston size yet. Assume std 4 inch bore on this tractor.

A stud extractor, some penetrating oil, and a lot of luck! My grandpa tried to remove mine one time and broke 4 of the studs off and had to drill them out and re tap the holes

I was lucky only one manifold stud broke off, and about 3 inches was still sticking out from  the head. So a good solid grip with vise grips removed all of them. These studs had been replaced once at least when the manifold was changed.
This morning was spent running taps in all threaded holes I could find. Sure makes the assembly process go smoother.

I just have to keep poking along, usually paced by the funds available:)

I took the rear main off the WD today and cut out new F gaskets and reinstalled the cap. Only saw minor wear on the rear main lower bearing. Also took off a rod cap and it looked like new. Crank journals looked good under both areas.
Cleaned up the oil pan, and the front timing cover. The pan looks pretty good and the corners at the end seals look to be in good shape and to correct 4-7/8 width dimension.
Did check the piston size and this is std 4 inch bore and stroke WD.

Road trip to Sandy Lake Implement yesterday with WD45 owner Gary G. Picked up a couple gaskets, shift knob and boot, manifold bolts and brass nuts, and gallon of PO#1 and reducer. That should keep me out of trouble for a day or two.
 Hope things are good in tractor land!
Also had a chance to read a copy of Old Allis News, very nice magazine and the articles were very good.

Thanks to local tire shop the new front tires are mounted for Dad's WD. $160 for the tires and tubes and mounting. Samson brand tri ribs. Should be good for several days.



Have the speedy sleeve, to install on the crank shaft extension and then can start putting the front cover back on with new crank seal.

 Update on the WD as it moves forward slowly. Some of these are in Les' Paint thread too.
Monday: began to wire-wheel paint from castings. Paint stripper had been used prior to get many layers of PO#1 off.
All the rear casting dates are mid January of 1950.




Tuesday evening. Most of the big stuff is off.




After seeing minor surface rust I decided I better get on it!




This after noon got some primer on the bare metal.
This is a big turning point for me on these.






This new compressor helped a lot also:)


I started to use paint stripper on most of the covers and items that need to be bolted on with gaskets. The plan is to clean those, install with gaskets and then prime on the tractor.

Yesterday was able to clean up several of the covers and get them primered also.
Today round trip to Pittsburgh to deliver our sons dog and see him off to Philly. We had to stop at Sandy Lake for some WD parts.:)
New battery box, tool box and several gaskets and misc. items to be able to get closer to completed the WD in the months to come.
Biggest cost items remaining are the alternator, battery and all the fluids.
 Weather was nasty! We had poor visibility on I79 for about 30 miles coming north.
Got home and hunkered down for the cold winters night.
Hope things are good in tractor land!

Chris, The 2 alternators I have on tractors came off old chebby trucks. Both still working after many years of service.
 And they were both free :)

I have been getting my alternators at NAPA. I think they are reconditioned. I am very pleased with the resulted of changing these WD's to 12 volt. This morning the driveways needed plowed again and The Ford Jubilee is headed into one bay of the sugarhouse so its a little protected, and I had it running last night. It started with the 6 volt system but just barely! I went to our daughters today and WD #3 hasn't been started in a couple weeks. Sets outside and was covered with a foot of snow. It fired right up with the 12 volt system with battery to spare! I was impressed! Temp was -10 last night.

Thanks for the kind words! That work you have bone on the "B" is very impressive! Looks like show quality to me. I like how you matched the mower color to the tractor. You will get a lot of comments as folks see you mowing with that 'NEW' tractor. I spent a lot of time on our B on the farm and was always impressed with how snorty it was. Very rarely could we get it stuck. and it hauled a lot of wood for us.

 I am a little over the top on pictures and text on my projects, its a little more like a blog, I guess. Hope I don't bore folks to death with trivia:).

Chris, you are definitely NOT over the top with your pics and explanations!  If we took a poll, I'd bet you might be only boring a couple of people and they probably haven't ever seen a WD or tore into a tractor! Wink

Thanks! If I just spent as much time doing some work as I do detailing the process, I would have this WD completed.:)

Here are some shots of the tool box and the battery box from Sandy Lake Imp. I was very pleased with the quality, the paint ( looks to be PO#1 powder coated) and the price too!





Also items like these, you find when your taking the tractor apart and you go "where am I going to get that"? Folks like our sponsor at Sandy Lake have in stock:

Seat bushings for lower pivot point of seat to brake cover.


Headlight gaskets and the spring clips for the distributor (which were just about rusted away).


Also has anyone repaired the cross shaft rods of the governor? Actually two shafts: the short top pivot shaft with the seal and long cross shaft with the brass bushings. I got new bushings and a seal and three tapered pins. Just have never had one apart yet. While this front timing cover was off I was going to learn something new.
These are the parts for the rebuild:



Front timing cover cleaned up a little. I think I need to drive out the tapered pins.  Have to check my Service Manual too.




Also  forgot to ask if they had repro steering wheels? Last one I got from OKtractors and was very pleased with it too.

Hope things are good out there in Allis land.

On a sad note:
Just heard that the wife's Dad passed away this morning (88 yrs). He had a WC for a long time. He will be missed by his family!

Been too cold in these parts to work on anything, -30 degrees F this morning. Truck would not start. Maybe frozen gas line? I did pick up a PREVAL aresol can from NAPA for painting. Will try this is in few weeks. Also got parts for my air filter system for compressor.

Folks, some pictures of the WD timing cover refurb. work.

The goal is to remove two worn bushings on the cross shaft and also replace the oil seal on the short shaft.


inside view prior to dis assembly.


Front cover removed exposing spring and tapered pin locations.


Also good ref for putting it back together:)




Seal on short shaft


Tapered pins removed with punch




Cross shaft and components in order of assembly




Bushings on both ends of this tube to be removed.




Removed tapered pin from short shaft.


Big end of pin is down and needs to be inserted from bottom when putting this back together.


Short shaft components in order of assembly.


Seal was pried out.


Inside bushing was tapped out with a 5/16 dia rod. This bushing did not have much wear. which makes sense since it is close to the action and gets some more oil.




5/16 dia all thread and a nut ground down to fit inside the tube was used with bench built slide hammer to remove the outer bushing.






The outer bushing was worn .020 out of round. Should there be a seal some where in this end?? Doesn't seem to be anything. Maybe a dust seal?


New seal to be installed for short shaft.


I used a dab of red silicone around the outside of the seal.


Outer bushing installed. Note this went in hard, and the bore closed a little. had to gently ream the I.D. for the shaft to fit.


Bushing on inside was modified to add a more generous lead in and then pulled into place with a large "c" clamp.


This was one of those, while your in there items. Not sure if this would have been a leak issue? Will try to get it back together today.

Maybe this will help someone working on these WD series tractor if they have not had this apart.

Folks,
Not moving very fast on this WD project. I try to clean up a few bolts each day. I have most of the bolts for the main covers cleaned inspected and primed. So I can start some assembly work to button the tractor back up. Hopefully will have most of the covers on before we begin to make maple syrup in a week or so.

 I did get the timing cover back together on the WD. By the way I followed Don(MO)'s advise and got new tapered pins from Sandy Lake for the two 3/8 shafts.

Here are some shots with the timing cover installed, with new gasket. The cover had to be pushed down a little to get the best crank shaft to cover alignment. I used a drill bit shank to check the alignment of the case to the crank, and then snugged it in place and adjusted the cam pressure screw.




Installed new crank seal. Used a 1.5 inch dia piece of plastic PVC pipe a foot long, as the driver and a 1 lb ball peen hammer as the force. It went in very nice and straight, and looks to have good contact with the speedy sleeve on the crank too. I put just a thin coating of gray gasket sealer on the cover, prior to installing the seal.

Folks,
 Getting back to this WD project. Maybe it will get a little warmer, we can only hope!

I need a good used pulley from a generator that I can transfer to the new alternator. I picked up the 12 volt alternator today at NAPA. Seems I have used all the good pulleys that I have for the other two tractors that I converted. Anyone have one? I may call Sandy Lake and see if they have one.

Also ordered the repro steering wheel for the WD last night too. I plan to buy a new piece of steel for the 7/8 inch dia. steering rod.
Today moved all the sheet metal and the tires from around the WD, out to the other building for some room too start work again. Just have not felt good for two weeks with nasty head cold.
One of the next projects is to get the new oil pan gaskets in place, and the oil pan back on. Then the side cover plate and gasket and the rearend cover plate / gasket. Then the final drives.
Many parts to clean and prep.
July 17 will be here soon!
 That's the date of our local Pioneer Steam and Gas Engine show, featuring Allis- Chalmers tractors and machinery. Sagertown PA.

 Picked up a good used pulley for the alternator from Gary G. Thanks!

Weather has been a little better. Got a few of the covers installed.

Here is the rear cover and gasket installed.


Cover under the starter.


Side cover and new gasket on WD engine.


Pan gaskets held in place with a light coating on Indian head shellac. Note the guide pins in place to help align the pan.




Pan end gaskets in place with 3 clips each end.


Just a small dab of gray silicone in the corners as recommended by Don.


Pan gently tightened into position


Total time for this installation about 1 hour.


The electrolysis tank is back on line and cleaning crud, paint, and rust off parts.

Some shots of the current status of the WD project. Feels like this tractor might come back together.

Caution WET paint!


Used same paint as the last WD (Van Sickle Tisco) but added hardner this time. I like it much better. Seems to have a little more gloss?










Started some assembly work.


Final drives are in place except for the lower pan. The inner clip is always a challange to get on the shaft. Races, bearings and seals and shaft went together nice.


Ordered a set of exhaust/intake manifold gaskets from Sandy Lake. Manifold is scheduled to go in E tank in next few days.


I think Dad would be tickled with the progress!

This has been a great story to follow. The pics and your attention to detail is awesome! I am so happy to see someone taking pride in keeping some family history alive. My dad and I restored my grandpas D-17 from the farm. That was a fun experience. Didn't quite take it down to the level you are though!

Thanks guys! I need some encoragement at times on these projects. This may be the last big tractor I do. At least for a while.:)
Brandon, That is great that you worked on your grandpas D17 with your Dad! I spent so many hours in the field on WD's and WD45's with Dad. I was fitting ground while he was planting oats or corn. We would pass one another and smile and wave. Never really got tired of that!:)
Starting to make some moves towards assembly of the WD now. I dug out the rails and removed some rusty bolts with the blue tip wrench.

Got a care package of AC parts from Sandy Lake today. They do a nice job of having what you need and getting it out in a timely fashion!

Today we installed the spark plugs in the WD. Also installed the water inlet casting then decided that I had a better one from a parts tractor, (bad 1/4-20 thread at one location) so removed that and will have to make two new gaskets.

Rear pans for the final drives are next on the list. If I can get those primed and painted and installed. The rear wheels could go back on, and it could set on the floor again!
Still need to find the plates that support the fenders. They are here somewhere!

 Good evening!
Weather has been good last few days here, so I made some progress on Dad's WD.

 Lots of small parts installed. Dave A came over and helped make the gaskets and install the sumps for the final drives. about a quart and a half of 90W gear oil in each. Best water inlet casting installed.


Manifold painted with Rustoleum High temp grill paint and ready to install.


Tank support in place. Also the shaft for the pedals installed.

Well I have about 4 hours of run time on the other tractor with this same coating, and it still looks pretty good. I am sure there are many more exotic and expensive ways to finish these hot items. This was a handy aerosol solution.

Folks,
 Good evening!
Spent most of the day around the WD project tractor.

Yes we have rear wheels mounted and its back on the floor! That was a balancing act for a few minutes. But blocked the tractor so it would not tip.


Exhaust manifold installed, I used a different approach on this one. I applied a VERY thin coating of Red High temp silicone to each gasket surface. Then installed the manifold nuts finger tight and let it set for a hour then tightened. ( I know these are supposed to be installed dry!)


Installed the new thermostat. These are a little tricky as the do not install the same as the original equipment ones. They go up in the neck, so that area has to be cleaned out to accept the outer portion of the new thermostat.


Water pump installed. Fan blades are in cleaning tank. Pulley is in process.


Oil filter base and the lines were cleaned and installed. I just used clear on the lines.


Shifter boot and new knob installed. ( Knob had been missing since 1960) :)


Will have same D series look.


Have noticed much more gloss to this paint with the hardener added! I used some Krlyon #1820 rattle can for touch up, and it does not have the gloss. (Used a little clear in those areas.

I am missing a few parts:
I need the wire clip that goes behind the block drain.
Need the clip for the PTO rod. ( goes on the steering wheel pedestal lower bolt.)
And need the clip that the parking brake rod come up through, goes on one of the right rear shift tower bolts.

The bug has bitten me--hard.  My little C is awaiting the machine work (promised it this week).  I bought a little B last week and I'm working a couple of deals on two more.  Oh my!  I'd prefer one with the history yours have.  Nice to have a family connection there.  Oh well, mine was in SOMEONE'S family.

There is something addictive about the restoration process! I wish you the best with your new tractors. I like the B's also. I am just getting to old to climb on and off them. Never thought a thing about it 40 years ago:)
