CASH is not going anywhere... used for small transactions / flea market / etc .... MOST of the big purchases in the country have been going electronic ( credit card) for years... I put $100. in my wallet and it lasts for 3 months... Use the VISA card for EVERYTHING. ... gas / grocery / fast food / hardware store / Menards.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Same here Steve, for those 'Instant Buys' cash is still King, use the cards for that which is not an important Instant Buy.

I'm with Steve on this one. Probably not going away in our lifetimes.....Unless someone gets all worked up about the word "God" in the portion with "In God We Trust"! I'd be happy to take that problem off their hands!

People all over are now using the credit card readers that plug into a cell phone.  You can pay the babysitter online.  HD's self checkouts are Card only now.  I did have to drop a few dollars into the can at a roadside produce stand today so I don't know how that'll work!

We got a Square reader for credit cards last year for use at the Farmers Market but had trouble with it, fortunately, we have a cash machine at the Markets and also sold "Market Bucks", $5 script, good at any stand.  Also people got  WIC and SNAP vouchers.  This year we only have a couple scrip vouchers, no Market Bucks and my sales are about 50/50 cash or credit cards.  Got a new Square machine and it works pretty well.  With all the rules and restrictions I now bag up the peaches and another guy takes the money or card payment.  It's working OK so far.  I seriously doubt that cash will go away completely in the near future.

this move is for your own good...... first get rid of all the filthy paper  ,stop all the crimes involving cash drug deals, etc. and make it easier to monitor who is spending and for what and stop tax evaders.   jan 1st 2021 the gov plans to offer to buy all cash at face value plus 15%  and then destroy it.  that will tempt many people plus the fact that paper money will no longer transmit disease. an expiration date will be enforced to make cash worthless at the end of the buyback.  somehow the gov will make compliance unavoidable, if not patriotic.    With all the dollars printed this year and corona virus this is the perfect time for our gov to push this thru.......... Inflation will be with us a long time and interest rates wont rise anytime soon .  Barter systems will be based on whatever  happens to be in shortage

Won't stop anything, the necessity of a druggy to get his materials could switch to stolen goods barter or gold or silver, even loaded cartridges' or firearms.  Stolen cars motorcycles, titles, deeds, license plates you name it can be used as a barter object.

Cannot see it ever happening with the poor, can barely manage a Debit card against a bank account IF they have one, know a few that still do not and have to cash paychecks at the grocer to pay bills for the month.

Several years ago I was at a convention in Lost Wages.  We were staying in one of the casinos, don't remember which.  I took a roll of quarters with me so I could win my fortune, discovered none of the slots took coins anymore.  Asked an employee about that, was told they changed over the machines to plastic because, 1 employees were getting sick and injured handling all the coins, 2. It cost more money to process the coins and 3. the insurance companies wanted to cut their expenses and offered cheaper rates if the casinos didn't deal with coins.  The guy told me the coin op laundry a couple blocks away still had coin slots but I never got there to try.  Came back with the roll.

For what it's worth Sweden has been working on this for several years and is scheduled to go all cashless in 2023.  Granted it's a smaller country and fewer people.  Banks will probably love it because I'm sure there are fees involved and savings in not having to handle the money.  On the other hand fewer jobs.

Dave, I know people will laugh at me for this, but those people you speak of will be tattooed with a bar code!
This IS coming, only a matter of when. It has it's advantages, but it will cost us our privacy and anonymity! every breath you take, every step you take, every choice you make will be monitored and recorded by the government, who knows better than oneself what is good for them.

Most of us may not see it all in our lifetime, but we are already seeing it now, to a small degree. you already cannot travel feely w/o being monitored. in many states, you must have an EZ pass to travel toll roads, or, you will be billed by mail. That is all recorded. Your picture is taken as you roll through the gate, your auto registration number is recorded, and your ezpass is recorded. You go to the Dr, your picture is taken, all your personal information is recorded and placed in a national 'cloud bank'.

A lot of what we accept today as normal, our forefathers would be aghast at!!!!!

I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Steve, who are these 30 million? how do they get their paycheck cashed? How do they pay bills? My suspicion is most of those are indigents, or illegals, and Like I said, one suggestion was 'barcoding' them. But, there are possibly some off the grid'rs  in that number, and they are some of the ones the gu'mnt is looking for! they WILL pay their taxes!

I remember, I think it was about 8 years ago now, there was talk about banks not taking cash, nor giving cash.  They were going to charge taxes on any paper checks deposited.  I never did hear anymore on that though, but maybe that was the start of all of this!!
