West KY Hwy 80 - Nancy - Pulaski County - Kentucky Saturday_17-June-2023 West_KY80_Gable End Cumberland House #M84.867361 ![]() Located between Bradley's Pleasure Church and Flatwoods Road, on the South side of KY Hwy 80 in the West Corner of the Ted Frye Road Junction. Although this house is a Cumberland, it is somewhat unique in that the house rafters/roof overhang and cover the front porch. Also, this is a good example of a weatherboard house that has been covered with Asbestos siding; as, for whatever reason, the Asbestos does not cover all the way down, leaving the weatherboard exposed from the windows down. This Asbestos siding always mimics brick or stone, with simulated mortar joints, and is available in many colors; at least in my area, the color shown on this house is by far the most prevalent. A big selling point for the Asbestos siding, let alone the fact that it really sealed up a house, insulating and stopping drafts, was that it cost about the same as a good paint job and will last forever, evidenced by the hundreds of old houses where the siding is today as good as it was when it was installed, long outlasting all the children that were born within it. Don't get this Asbestos siding confused with the also common Asbestos Shingle siding, which is thin brittle "shingles" made of a mixture of cement and Asbestos fibre; those will break like glass at the slightest excuse. There are several houses around here with the Asbestos Shingle siding, but many more with the type shown here. These old houses are double-boxed and storm-sheeted and will long outlast the new houses that replaced them. Being storm-sheeted and double-boxed, they will take a hit from a tornado and stand firm. 37.131211°N 84.867361°W 357.2256 m 1,172' ![]() |

Mom still lives in the house Dad and her built it 1962-63, across the fields from Grandpa’s farm where Dad was born, Grandpa offered to sell the farm to Dad and Mom in the late ‘60’s, Mom absolutely refused, said ‘none of my kids are gonna be farmers’, so Gramps sold the farm, less than 10 years later Dad and Mom separated, later divorced, Mom got the house in the settlement, still lives there, can see the Farmstead across the now urban sprawl rooftops.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.
