I took one look at that thing, took the side caps off and the ignition coil, and walked away with my head shaking. And I havent been back. I'm thinking I might check the point gap and call it good cause to change out those points, it looks like it would be best to just pull the distributor and do it on a werk bench.

Is it the early style with the distributor in the front of the engine behind the fan?

That early style with the distributor driven off the end of the camshaft at the front of the engine was a real PIA. You really couldn't see what you were doing and needed to prop a mirror down between the fan and rad to work on it. It seems to me as if there where two sets of points as well, one for each bank of cylinders. Old Henry more or less developed the concept of that V8 by merging two Model A 4 cylinder engines which resulted in two water pumps and two sets of points. I think that the fan was mounted on the generator.

What is that FH in? I have a 51 Mercury I'm restoring great aunt bought it brand new from Coberly Ford, have the original sales receipt hand written paid 2300$ for it got 50$ for her old car, extras were heater, radio, fender skirts and outside rear mirror. she put 200$ down. It has 89k miles on it. She should have stopped driving long before she did. Thats why its being restored.

Couple different distributors used on the 32 to 48 ford - then later changed again
Early used the Ball type - with coil on top and 2 caps on side - To put points in - remove the distributor from engine - then work on it on bench Late type Crab has a flat cap with col mounted off to side so little easier to work on but removing it also works better . Seems I did a lot of them way back - only thing to be sure of is to INDEX into cam as the drive lug has to fit into slot on end of cam - if not careful you will crack housing when tightening down the 2 bolts . |
