Hello everyone. I just joined the forum as I am the proud new owner of a 1955 CA.
I have a 2013 Kubota that I do all my yard work with but always wanted to own an antique tractor to take to the fairs, parades, shows and pulls. Not sure if I can post pics yet or if there is a probation period for new members? Looking forward to getting advice and parts contacts from everyone here. It is in pretty decent shape but i want to make it really nice. For starters I want to get new oem coolant temperature and oil pressure gauges for it. My oil pressure works, but the coolant doesn't seem to move after driving it around. I will also need to get new rear spin-out rims. The tires are holding air, but the rims have some pretty bad looking rust blisters around the valve stems. I will post pics as soon as I can.

Here it is. Not sure if I paid too much or not, but I don't care. It makes me smile.
I paid $2500 Canadian for it, but it was local, so I didn't have to have it hauled or shipped. He rebuilt the motor with a new cam, all new gaskets, it has a new clutch, converted to 12 volt and he said he rebuilt the steering box. The PTO and hydraulics work, but I tried the hand clutch and it is seized, I can't move it. I also haven't tried any of the rear wheel locks or nuts. But it starts and runs beautifully, no smoke or leaks. What do you all think?

Welcome to a very helpful forum. But hey the only person that has to be happy with the tractor is you. Good luck with your new tractor.

Thank you MDM1. I'm looking forward to learning from everyone here. I still need to buy some manuals for it. I also need to get all the fluids changed in it once I find out what all I need and all the drain/fill locations.
I'm busy with work right now but will keep checking into the forum every chance I get.

Welcome to the Forum. You will find plenty of good advice and guidance on here. The vendors that advertise on here and help to support this Forum are great sources for the parts you need. That is a nice CA. The spin out rims can be a bit pricey so you may want to look at repairing the existing rims if they are not too bad.

After looking at the picture of the rims you will probably want to go for a new set and some fresh tires.

I think I see the knock out for the hand clutch is missing. Check and see if it has the clutch and just missing the handle. I would think a 55 model would have had the hand clutch but maybe not. Nice tractor.

Thank you Sparky and Hubert. Yes the handle is missing for the hand clutch (need to get one of those too, lol) but I threaded a bolt in and put a pipe on it, but I can't move it.
I don't want to break anything until I learn more about it. I know my Kubota's but I'm new to the old tractors.

You may have to use some force on the hand clutch as the spring in there is pretty stiff. As on mine it is a little touchy when you release it. It tens to grab a little. Nice looking CA. Ask a lot of question to the people on this site as they very helpful. Welcome!!

The hand clutch may possibly be bolted up solid. Been done before. I wouldn't force it.

Thanks Rayhowling. Do you have any names handy that I can try?
I see I can still get them new if I have to, so that is good.

You picked a good model for your first AC. The B,C, and CA were very good small tractors. CA is my favorite, Hand clutch is very useful especially if a belly mower is used. Quit a few have had the hand clutch made solid especially for tractor pulling events. That’s the only good reason in my opinion. They have a lot of low end power. Looks like it has been converted to 12volt ? I forgot to look to see if it has shutters in front of the radiator. You can crank those open or close them to obtain proper operating temperature. Ours tends to be cold blooded so the shutters stay fairly closed even in the summer. Both gauges are fairly reasonable in price and easy to replace. If you get into replacing the brakes or hand clutch, wear a respirator as the pads were made of asbestos. Lots of dust gets in there and it can be nasty when you blow out the debris. Pretty easy to work on.
Good luck, other than the rear rims she looks pretty good. |

Nice looking CA. You may have paid a little on the high side, but getting a local tractor with a newly rebuilt engine is worth a lot.
There is no "probationary period" on the forum. Everyone is expected to act like an adult. |

Doesn't appear to be your first Allis? Looks like a WC in the background.
With a completely rebuilt, that is not too bad a price to pay. WELCOME to the forum! You really can't tell how bad those rims are until you get them off and have a look see. A lot of time it is just surface rust and you can cut out a piece in the rim around the valve stem and weld a piece in. Depends and YOU get to decide what you want to do. As for the hand clutch, it COULD be bolted together. The only way I know to find this out is to pull things apart and have a look see. Some people didn't use it,, so when it went out the just bolted the whole thing together. It ruined the whole clutch assy in the process... if so, you'll have to try and find one on here in the classifieds. Just put in the topic WTB CA Hand Clutch Assy and then wait. I know there must be some out there somewhere. Good luck and again,,,,,,WELCOME!! |

Good to see a new Allis Chalmers fan. With a rebuilt engine you didn't pay to much in my book. As stated the hand clutch is most likely bolted fast to keep it from slipping.
On your rims! If you are a welder I would repair those if they are not any worse than I can see from the picture. Here is a rim that I took pictures as I fixed it with a piece of and other rim with a bad side with one side not rusted. Here is a link to the pictures. https://public.fotki.com/DickL/tractor_parts/tractor-rim-repair/ My second shift forman didn't show up one night and I had the camera in the truck. I was able to do this and still take care of the shift. I welded it up a couple days later but didn't have the camera. After it was painted you could not tell where the patch was. Not a hard job at all. Edited by Dick L - 14 Sep 2018 at 2:56pm |

Looks like a WD with spinout rims in the background. I would start soaking the locks for the spin out rims with some PB Blastor or something along that line to get them so they will turn.

The picture with the WC in the background may be the previous owners tractor, or even their picture. He stated in his 1st post, "I have a 2013 Kubota that I do all my yard work with but always wanted to own an antique tractor to take to the fairs, parades, shows and pulls". I think this is his 1st Allis. Good lookin old gal too.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I appreciate it. I haven't had much time because I am working out of town with my dump truck and it is my busy season. So forgive me if I'm slow to reply.
But I am already learning lots here from what I have read so far. I wasn't sure if it was possible to patch my rims. I'll have to let a good welder look at them. No, I don't have the rad shutters and a member already offered to sell me a set. I have been spraying everything with Krown to get it loosened up. The other Allis's in the pic are my friend's from whom I bought this one from. Those pics were at his farm. He has a CA with a loader and a couple WD45's. Only other thing I need to decide is do I get the Allis snap couplers and keep it original so I can borrow his 2 bottom plow and cultivator, or if I can covert it to use a Cat 1 or 2 quick hitch and use my Land Pride implements. I bet this tractor would be great with my box blade on my hills.
