Ive wanted an unstyled wc for a whole and yesterday I went and picked mine up finally. Found it on cl for 650 bucks motee is free ,all the important parts have been covered and my buddy is gonna trade me some tin so the whole Tractor is 36 since now it has some misc parts off other years. He has about eight wc s so he let store it at his house till spring. He's confident it won't take much to get her going hopefully have it running in time for hutch next year.. ..   .

Congratulations!
If one of your tractors has the early transmission cover with four vertical bolts around the transmission tower, I would be interested in working a deal with you.

Wow look at all those WCs
I bought one at the begining of the year and had it shiped back to the UK, I really love this model, on mine it has a box between the gear box and final drive, don't see the perpose of this other than it puts the back end out of drive, i notice none of thest look to have this gear box, I assume its an add on ?? also how do you put the pully into gear ? the PTO works but pully dont turn do i need to slacken the lock nut, I have not had much time to play with it as yet as working away from home at the mo

I think it had something to do with the power cultivator lift. Not sure if mine has that extra gearbox, but it does have the power lift.
Someone with more knowledge (i.e.- Bill Long) will chime in with a better answer!

Is it two rounds things right next to the clutch pedal if so yes that's for the cultivator Brendan has one too bad he isn't on this forum that kid knows everything about the wc I mean everything. He can tell you what nut and bolt is different for what year it's insane that's why he has so many wc s though it's his favorite Tractor

Nice one Cody. I like that era of WC too. You'll have to find the right rims, and rubber tires if you want a smooth ride like you had at Hutch in 2015. lol  Tim

WDman, nice find.  I just drug out our family's old WC out of the corncrib last weekend.  First time it had seen sunlight in 33 years.  Mine's a 1936 model also (serial #WC 14981).

that was an add on for use with the roto-baler so you didn't have to pop transmission out off gear while it wrapped the bale with twine. The pulley needs to be slid in to be engaged, theres a set screw on top that needs to be backed off and tgen you can slide the pulley in.

Cool!  Get 'er running and tires on 'er.  I need to change the head gasket on mine.  I would love to hit a show with ya with both of them running together.  Unfortunately, she's not high on the list.  I have 2 WD45 engines in my garage to get running first.  Finding a machinist was a royal pain.  Found one in Devils Lake but that's a pain to constantly go to for parts work.

Gentlemen,  You were asking about the throw out gear toward the rear of the WC.  That was put there originally to permit the power lift to work without moving the tractor.  Remember, at the time we cultivated with the WC a lot.  Sometimes you got yourself "painted into a corner" and could not lift the cultivator with the power lift - which mounted just forward of the throw out gear - unless the tractor was moving.  By using the throw out gear it allowed the cultivator or sickle bar mower - some used the power lift for the sickle bar mower - to be lifted while the tractor was not in motion.
This throw out shift was not on all the WC's.  Not the Flat tops or un styled models but was added later to correct a power lift problem.
When the roto bailer came out, which required to stop with the pto running to eject the bale, we used this throw out gear to stop the tractor and let the pto continue to run. For operator convenience we sometimes welded a longer rod on the Throw Out Lever so the operator did not have to bend over to operate the throw out.  Later the WD came out with the "live" PTO by use of a hand clutch.  Course later the "live pto" was just about standard.
Good Luck!
Bill Long

ps:  Sorry for the long explination

So Bill...the power lift can only be used when the tractor is moving, without the throw out gear? I would think it would still work in neutral?
Also... after you tripped the throw out, did you have to depress the clutch to shift back?
Thanks

Creston, when the transmission is in neutral on the old unstyled WC, that was it, power in the shaft stopped right there...transmission is ahead of the lift. the lift turned in correlation to the selected gear.

Hope you get your WC going soon and without a lot of "surprises". I have a soft spot for the 1936 as my father bought one new with a new '36 All Crop combine. I have some pictures of him with it if I could ever figure out the blankity picture posting procedure on here. Came across a decent running WC a few years ago and put it in the shed as another project for retirement but the more I think about it I may just give it a good cleaning and hoses and brakes and see what can be done with the original paint. I think it may have the original rear tires, if not they are pretty old. Any thoughts about the paint?
Someday one of those old combines would be a good idea too.
Also, I don't like having to crank the thing to start although it usually is fairly easy. Had a vague idea about trying to attach a ring gear to the belt pulley with a starter and battery. Is that too weird of an idea?

You can put a bellhousing from a styled one right in. You'd also need the flywheel with ring gear amd starter of course. And rhe battery box. Fairly simple to do if you are doing a total tear down.

The bell housing is probably a much easier solution than trying to engineer a new starting system. Was an electric starter an option for a 1936 WC?

That throw out lever is called a "traction release coupling".  And to AChunter, I have seen a setup similar to what you describe.  A ring gear on the belt pulley and a starter attached to the frame, I beleive it was a Ford starter of some kind.

Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.
