We've been getting freezing rain since 2:30pm, at 9:58pm the land line rings. When that happens I know it means a mad dash to somebody in need or worse. I jump up out of bed, grab the phone only to hear a recorded message from the school that it has been cancelled for tomorrow. The only saving grace I can think of was that the powers to be were watching the state of the union address AND the response but still, no common sense. Years ago our local doctor told a story about his dad, a farmer and president of the school board. He was planting corn with a team of horses and the school teacher came out across the field in a horse and buggy to talk to him about a problem at the school. When he pulled up I guess he told the teacher that, "anybody that didn't have any more sense than to drive across a mans fresh planted field didn't have sense enough to teach children," and fired him on the spot. Evidently, none of our school board members are descendants of him.

Do you need to know when school is cancled? Can you opt out of the notifications?
I would LOVE it if they called the night before. Today they called at 6:00am to say school was canceled. Some people have already left for work like me if I didn't already have the day off and wouldn't have a chance to make child care arrangements with such short notice. Usually they call around 5:00-5:30am to give notice to the people who work early.

Yes phones are so good anymore. My sons cell number got on the list with the county one south of us and even turned off at night it goes off with warning to get out the flood is coming. It still will not keep Santa Barbra county of court since the flood there kill people last year. But they sure are trying I guess they will argue.

OH yes, opting out of notifications is option 7 at the end of the message but just like the "close door" button in the elevator, you can push it all you want but all it does is make you think you are doing something, in the end, doesn't change a dang thing. As for the tv, everybody around us cancelled, we knew it was coming. I'm lucky, this is the girls last year so I don't worry about daycare.

I'm betting there are a LOT of guys and gals on here that remember 'back in the day' ,,,,,,,,, I don't remember school EVER being cancelled. It was a hall of a lot colder and a hall of a lot more snow!! And EVERY BODY walked or rode a horse to school. We got taken in when the old man,,,,er um Dad,,,,,,hauled the milk in to the creamery.
If I remember correctly,,,,,,,,the teachers only WORK (attend school) 167 days a year....WTH's up with that?? I was gonna say something here:
