Do any of you old timers remember what the qualifications for a 1-Y?
I looked it up, 1-Y by definition, eligible to serve, but only in time of war, or emergency. But it doesn't say how that determination was made |

Well,,when I volunteered for the Navy's Buddy-Buddy plan in 1965, the Vietnam war was just getting started, so a bunch of us gung ho guys figured we'd go over there and shoot a bunch of them commies,,,but after failing the hearing test 4 times, The base commander sent my sorry azz back home and a few weeks later I received a card from the navy that I had been re-classified 4F due to my hearing and being flat footed,,,,? Bout 3-4 years later I received another card that said I could be classified 1Y if I wanted to try again. I told em Thank you very much, checked the NO box and here I am,,,,,,Guess I never knew what either classification meant,,,,,,and,,,and,,,I'm too old for them to take me now,,,,

When I was drafted in '53 for the Korean war, I only heard of 1-A. I have no idea when the draft ended, I just know neither of sons were drafted.

Hey Joe couldn't they still use good story tellers for moral?
![]() I didn't have to register, so I didn't. Mom was all over me about that as she lost many friends and family to war.

I was a draft dodger, figured if they were going to get me anyway I would volunteer and get a choice of what I was going to do. Enlisted in the Air Force and was at Lackland AFB 4 days later. After finishing my enlistment I joined the Army National Guard (aviation unit) and stayed for 30 years. Best education I had was in the military.

My draft # was 6. I was going 1 way or another. I had graduated from computer processing school and tried to enlist in the army as a programmer. No way did they want a programmer. They wanted boots on the ground. I had been driving a truck, they didn't want one of those either. During basic, I found myself in the back of a 2.5 ton truck on my way to special forces, one of 3 guys of several hundred guys in basic. Oh well. Wound up finishing up in Germany as a mechanic. 77th HEMC detachment B Mannheim Germany. Another guy and I were issued a Jeep and done a lot of traveling making modifications to m88's, 578's, armored personnel carriers, etc. Best German Beer --- Monninger Export In Glass bottles. The stuff in a can tastes like American beer.

Joined the Naval Air Reserve in junior year of high school - after senior year I was sent active duty about 6 months later - spent 2 years on carrier fueling planes V4 Div , got out and applied for a job some place and they wanted to know my draft status - said they needed to see my draft card (all I had was DD 214) so had to go to draft board and register - they said since I had not applied for draft at 18 I was going to be sent immediately active draft status - and get ready to be inducted - then I showed them my DD 214 and Navy papers - was told they would reclassify me in a few months but would be other than 1 A - forget what it even was

Thanks GR, I found that last night when this came up, but it doesn't really say what the parameters are to get a 1-Y, but I think I figured it out. I think 1-Y was those who's lottery no. was higher than the highest no. called for the given year. This all came up because I was watching Ken Burns Vietnam documentary, and was reminiscing. I couldn't remember my draft lottery number, so I looked it up on the net. (170) then, out of curiosity, I looked up the highest number drawn that year (195). So OK, but I was never called. Now, I will admit several, well, more than several alcohol influenced brain suppression years about that time, so, my memory is fizzy. I could not explain why I was not called. I do remember receiving a 1-Y classification....but I don't know why. This morning I was discussing with my bride, she double checked my 'research' and discovered that they actually only called up to 121 that year, not 195. In '69 the lottery was conducted for all men born '44 to '50, and 195 of 366 were called. In 1970 lottery was for '51, an 121 of 366 were called. |

I was drafted in 1969 but it was before the lottery, still had a board that sat around and decided who they wanted to pick, try not to make your friends mad.

I was in college at the time and had a student deferment, I think it was 4-s. It appears you are only a couple months older than I am. I was also in the 1970 lottery (for born in 1951) My number was 315. Only lottery I ever won. I submitted to change my classification from 4-s to 1-a because of the 315. Never heard back from anyone. Don't know if it got changed or not, or to what.

I was hitch hiking to Alaska, called Dad one day to let him know where I was, and he says "got a selective service letter here on the table" so I ran down to the nearest Air Force recruiter and told him, and he says no sweat we'll take you. They sent me to Weather School in Rantoul, then to Arizona. I told them I would like to go to Alaska. They told me if I volunteer for Alaska, I would end up in Viet Nam because that's where every one goes, Two weeks later I get a letter saying you are coming to Nebraska. Someone didn't know how to spell Alaska right.
But That was the best thing that ever happened to me. Been here 54 years Love it here. Worked Dairies and farm work in my spare time, had a crew of off-duty service men that helped me work for 6 different farmers putting up hay or other farm work. Ended up marrying the farmers daughter. |

I don't even remember what my number was, as I enlisted before it came. I joined the Navy and as fate would have it, I got sent to Nam right out of boot camp. There were four of us that enlisted from La Crosse and the other three guys went home for Christmas and then to the East coast, to the ship yards in Philly. We graduated boot camp on December 21st and they flew me straight to the West coast and then to Japan to board the ship. Well, they weren't in port, so they flew me to the Philippines to get on board. Guess where the ship was headed. yep, to the gun line off the coast of Nam.

In 64 the 1-A was you have been had. ---after going to Chicago induction center at 4:00am, they did their testing and sent me back home with 5 others that went up on the train. all of the rest of the trainload were sent to boot camps. Later I got a card that said I was now classed as 4-F but don't go hide because we still can send you overseas----they never did, and years later they sent a card saying that I was no longer on the draft hit list,----reason?--too old! --- The draft ended shortly after that.

Draft was long over when I enlisted in 1979. I did recieve a card reminding me it was mandatory to signup for selective service and not doing so could have criminal consequences. Mom forwarded it to me when I was in basic training. My TI laughed an said it was a big F-up he'd take care of it. Nearly 20 years later I recived another notification. Came from the Marine Corp. it wasn't to late I should join and meet my selective service obligation. I'm guessing 79 and 99 looked similar on the written records. I called the number and it was a recruiter, I told him I had to decline his offer since I already had 19 years in the airforce and was due to retire. I did not get to retire since I was deployed and stop loss my retirement was denied. Three times I was stop lossed and 6 years later I retired. They did ask me to extend again even though I was past high year tenure. My commander said he could get a waiver. I didn't except.

This reminds me of an incident at Ft Riley, there was a time where they were sending people home to wait on orders where and when to report for deployment to Vietnam, anyway one guy (I think name was Kearney?) was sent home, he was from somewhere not too far from Ft Riley, after about a month and half he came back and talked to CO as he hadn't received orders, told him go back home would take care of it, last I heard before I deployed he had not received any orders, don't know happened..Any of you guys happen to know this person??????????? |

I graduated from HS in 69. My mother took me to Air Force recruiter. She did not want me to to go to Army or Marines and I did not object. AF recruiter told her only 10% of AF go to VN. Well I ended up an aircraft load master after basic training. Guess were I went? I ended up in VN In 72, 73 ,74 and to end aT April 75. So much for the 10% I was one of the ten %
