We were throwing some stuff in a big roll off dumpster today getting the homeowners garage ready to become a music studio. I saved a treadmill. Brought it home and pulled the motor and speed control and circuit board. I now have a 1.5 hp drillpress motor.
I messed with it a while and got the wiring down to just a on/off switch and dial speed controller.

I've heard they work good on belt/disc sanders.

I’ve been thinking on that. I put a Jack shaft and step pulleys on my last old drillpress and it works perfect. I have a big old heavy duty Craftsman belt sander with no motor. I’m thinking of mounting it on there. Only worry it’s an open ended brush type motor.

I have a treadmill ,on the shelf, wanting to use it as the infeed 'belt' from hopper to trommel for a tow behind 'mini soil sifter'.
You need to use the  treadmill 'speed sensor' and controller  to get proper control of speed and torque. The sensor is a simple reed switch that 'sees' a magnet go by every rev of the front roller. THAT's what 'closes the loot' and gives you control.
Still trying to decide what to use the 'incline' linear actuator for.... that's a nice pice of kit.....

i have a variable speed press on my work bench in the semi trailer, works o-k, but if it's cold out it don't work well when the belt gits cold and stiff. it just spins. i don't think i've ever changed the speed on it in the 10 plus years i've owned it.
