Orchard grass took off 10 days ago when we finally got a nice 1.5” of soaking rain over 2 days on freshly spread fertilizer. Started heading out so we knocked 2 fields down. Conditioner is usually on the WD but decided to use the more comfortable 160. Very happy my new 2nd set of hydraulic lines I added worked the Enorossi great. The 160 ran the 4 basket Tedder very well. It’s a good 40 hp tractor that turns short and is comfortable to run. I haven’t found anything that it doesn’t do well.

My XT is normally on the Tedder but I wanted to try the 160 instead. Just had to snap a picture with her new wide front wheels and tires.

Great pictures. Just curious as to why have hay conditioner when mowing with a mower/conditioner? I used to have front tires like that on my 200, but went to the 4 rib tread to keep from "plowing" when turning. We're about a week away from starting hay here in central Ky. We need rain.

They are off of a 200. Carlisle 9.5Lx15.
I was expecting that question. There are 3 reasons. 1st cutting orchard grass becomes very tough as it heads out. The stem grows quickly above the blade grass. Cattle or horses do not like it that way. And we sell to both customers. They will waste the hay to avoid eating the tuff stem as they try to pick out the blade grass. So we try to cut it before it heads out if weather permits. Although the 390 mower/ conditioner does a decent job of breaking the hay, I have found running the conditioner within 30 minutes of cutting with the 390 it further breaks and softens the stalk. This also aids in drying time. Several hay farmers in our county after cutting their hay with a Discbine use crimpers that have both rollers made of steel. They were widely used years ago but are now being reproduced by Mennonite farmers in PA. Pretty expensive machine for our small farm so I came across the AC conditioner and it works very well. It has made a big difference in the quality of hay. Our cattle no longer waste the hay and dry time has been reduced significantly as the stem contains a lot water. Along with the Tedder, we have reduced drying by a least 1 day. With May’s crazy weather that can mean the difference between making quality hay or it getting rained on.

Nice pictures! I also run a crimper after cutting with a NH 472, but mine is a very old with both rollers being steel. I've heard one roller being rubber does a better job. keith so. va.

Looks good Robbie. I'm trying to wait till Memorial Day weekend. Down in our area hay just seems short this year if it was fertilized or not.

Thanks Gary, it was getting waist high. Should be some nice hay if the weather cooperates. Local forecasters have changed the forecast 3 times since Thursday. Rain wasn’t supposed to be here until next Tuesday. This morning they changed it to Sunday afternoon. Will continue to Ted twice a day and X our fingers. Ugh

We made some beautiful hay today. The conditioner did its job as did the Tedder. In 48 hours we cut and baled some beautiful orchard grass hay. It was a great day, a great way to start the hay season off.
Thanks Mike

Gear box went out on our rake so thankfully our neighbor loaned us his wire wheel rake. Allowed us to be able to Bale our hay but I wasn’t impressed with it. Left too much laying in the field.

Harvey I’m sorry for the loss of your cousin. We live on the other side of the Massenutten mountain about 40 minutes from where you are describing. Rain is coming tonight so no more cutting hay for a few days.

I know a lot of you guys out there appreciate old iron. This tractor is new to our farm. It belongs to a good friend. It was his dad’s JD 70 diesel they had on their farm. It had sit for 30 years and he asked me to help him get her running again. It only took a 3 ft pull from my D17 diesel and she fired up. After determining the pony motor was too far gone he purchased a 12V electric starter kit which also included a alternator to replace the generator. Excellent kit, and we upgraded the rest of the electrical wiring and replaced the voltage gauge. The ole girl runs well and did well on the baler although 1st low is a bit fast. It is totally different than our AC tractors, takes a bit to get used to driving it. It does have live pto and a lever that disconnects/ engages the pto on the fly. Which reminds me of the pto disconnect lever on our 6060. I did feel a little unsafe with no fenders though. 2 cylinder has a lot of torque and never smokes even under load. He wanted us to do some farming with it and was disappointed when he couldn’t be there to drive it himself.

Got a soft spot for the green 2 lungers. Sound kinda neat especially under load. Dad did some minor work on some back in the day when he was the local mechanic. Seemed like an accident waiting to happen with no fenders and the way they wound jump if too much clutch applied. LOL

Its hard to beat a free tractor. Just keep it stored for him and use it when ever we want to. I would have never bought one but I couldn’t turn that deal down. The amount of torque it has is impressive. My first chore with it was to pull our Case loader out while Charlie was pulling a tree out of the river along our river front property. The big tree was lifting the rear of the Case 310G way up in the air even though it has 1,800 lbs of weight on the rear ripper as Charlie was trying to lift it over the bank. Hooked the 70 to the drawbar with a chain and it pulled him out. I like my 59 D17 diesel better than the 56 JD for sure, but it is a neat piece of history. Steve, with no foot clutch, a brake pedal on each side, having a smooth working hand clutch is critical. They will jump for sure lol, I reworked the clutch in this one so it’s pretty smooth. The one nice feature I like, rebuilding the clutch standing beside the tractor without having to split in 2.

Nice looking equipment it's great to see old iron is such good condition. We try to keep ours up as well. I also like the sports car I have a couple of those too. At first glance I thought it was a Fiat 124 spider but I think it be a Miata.
