Read the directions!!!!! Well, that's what I did as we go to putting the steering clutches back together on the HD5G, just in case there was something I was overlooking. Well, I guess I should have read up before taking stuff apart, because the service manual says that I should have marked the 3 main components of the steering clutches before taking them apart, so that they get put back together in the same position. Well, they're not marked, and are in pieces, and are ready to go back together. ....but obviously not in the same position as they originally were in. What is the crisis factor of this oversight, anyone know? Thanks, Darrel

darrel I don't have an HD5 (almost bought an H3 2 years ago....).

Dumb idea.. Is there ANY chance you can see 'marks' where the parts were attached? Sometimes shining a light at a 'flat' angle can pick up a slight ding or scrape. I'm thinking you've got TWO piles of 'stuff' and not one BIG pile ?

Maybe wait a week if you can, search with  Google ,check other forums, look for pictures, etc. Try this site...http://www.liberatedmanuals.com/... he might have the 'tech manual',maybe, just maybe it'll help.

If you need to take your mind and body off that 'project', you could come up here, remove the Buda diesel from my A-C FP50 and tear the engine off the Cockshutt and stuff into the FP50 for me.......lol,hehehe...yeah I gotta do that one day....though 7 squirts of ether starts Buda.

Not a problem. The reason for marking is that the bolt pattern is NOT simetric. They made it that way so it would be reassembled as it was origionally. Assemble it without the springs and disks then mark it.

Darrel,Darrel !! Calm down !!  Take your felt pen and black out section 2 (or wherever you are reading that) It won't make any difference anyway. Clean it up, check the steels and discs, put it back together and then mark it with a center punch. Then you can say "we did it perfectly"  If you find a disc or 2 in there that has a tooth missing, replace those too. They could be some of the original wobble discs that were phased out too. (I probably shouldn't even confuse you with that)  In the early days they put a disc or 2 in each clutch pack that was out of round so to speak so that when you disengaged the clutch it would cause a wobble effect  that would help loosen the other discs and help the clutch work easier and faster. They didn't seem to help much and were discontinued early on. Don't remember if there were 1 or 2 in each  clutch. And I think they were missing  2 teeth each 180 degrees apart (for identification). Anyway forget all that and just put it together at it will be fine,  I've done it many times before

Thanks, for the all the input guys, and yes I do feel better John.
Now, onto the next question. I see needle bearings everywhere; on the steering clutch lever pivots, in the steering clutch intermediate linkage, on the transmission clutch lever pivot, and on the brake pedal pivots. Are all of these needle bearings the same? And if so, are they a common one that can be gotten at NAPA or somewhere, anyone have a number for them and the seals? Trying to get all of the things involved with the steering to be as flawless as possible. Thanks, Darrel

I replaced the bearings in the levers with bronze bushings from a bearing supplier. If you want to use needle bearings you can get them from a bearing supply place as well. I prefer the bronze bushings.

OOPS - I never marked my clutch packs when I replaced the parts with HD11 parts . Guess I will need to take them apart and mark them - it's only been 30 years now since I did that job . Seems I didn't mark the other 4 or 5 HD5 machines I worked on either - but somehow they all worked when finished .
Yes the bronze or oil lite bushings work better than the needle bearings - IF the shaft is not worn to bad from no grease in bearings or worn out parts . even then the brass will tighten up that worn part.

Shameless

How about this for lucking out even if it is a different colour - 800 hours!!  KOO mightn't like it because no dual stacks but they were a pretty honest machine from some users around here.
