UPDATE: the man who sold me the mower a few months ago in working mint condition was so sad to hear it not working anymore he came out at 9pm last night to diagnose it. Sure as heck it Is the solenoid that has to be replaced because when I bypassed it with jumper cables hooked to the battery and crossed it with a flathead the mower cranked right up. Here’s another photo of the one that I bought for it that’s made by simplicity but doesn’t work at all My 1984 hydro 616 mower stopped cranking the other day after working fine, after turning the key multiple times the starter solenoid kept clicking so I believe that has to be replaced. I have searched all over and can’t find anything to replace this part and the replay. Can someone PLEASE help me find this? I’ll Zelle you $5 if you can please just help me find a website that caters to the lawnmower 616 hydro mower parts so I can pick out what I need from that ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Lost22 - 28 Oct 2024 at 3:09am |

For those curious yes I’ve used parts tree, sourced the exact pieces and that did nothing but prevent the clicking because all of the wires didn’t match what I received

just take it to Auto Zone or NAPA and tell them you want a GENERIC replacement... Will still have the two BATTERY and STARTER terminals and the small KEY POWER terminal

the one above is for a AUTO and is bigger, heavier, handles more power... you can also buy a GENERIC one for a lawn mower that will handle smaller batteries for 10- 20 HP motors..... Amazon, Farm Store , Tractor Supply... etc.

if you are not familiar with Starter Wire... The TWO BIG LUGS have large cables.. One from the BATTERY + terminal and the other BIG WIRE goes to the electric starter motor... When you turn the key to START, it puts 12 v thru the small wire to the small terminal on the solenoid... Some solenoids have a second small terminal which you do not need.. The solenoid should be GROUND thru its metal case to the tractor frame.

Yes I’m aware of that, I wasn’t aware of it not needing to be wired to the 2nd smaller solenoid. Currently it’s mounted under the seat directly to the frame of the mower, it seemed to wanna work when I buy passed the relay with a screw driver so I just need to find the right part for it so it’ll crank and now possibly a battery

Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, they all stock them. A solenoid is a solenoid.

if you bought a NEW SOLENOID and it did not fix the problem, then the solenoid is junk or your little WIRE to the keky switch is not HOT... check for 12v from the KEY.
you should hear the solenoid CLICK when you turn the key to START.. if not, then you dont have 12v signal... your problem MIGHT be the KEY switch and not the solenoid .. ?
