My hearing is starting to become aggravating to my wife.
I’ve grown used to not hearing well and not really bothered by it but I can see her point.
It’s also created a few problems at work.
I’m gonna go get hearing aids soon. Don’t know why I dread them but I’m sure I’ll grow to like them.

I’m right behind you Thad. Fortunate to be in good health otherwise but hearing is a hereditary issue for me. But man it’s hard to make the move!

I slowly got hard of hearing many years ago... maybe 30 yrs or so.  Constantly asking ppl, what did you say?  I went through 3-4 pairs over the years, they were crapola.  The modern/recent pair I now have (resound) has made a world of a difference.  Now I can hear most everything which sometimes is ... not... a blessing... LOL  Mine has Blutooth and is connected to my iphone.  I can now carry on conversations on the phone and somewhat hear/understand what ppl say with the added benefit, pandora and a couple other free phone apps, I can listen to music as I work making for a much nicer day.  Half my hearing problem is I have tinnitus pretty bad.

I've had both over the ear, and molded in the ear aids.  I like the over the ear better, BUT, in the wind, they can get irritating.  In the ear, never could get used to them, ear canal always itched like crazy.  Have to see which you like.

You do not need to spend $5-6000.00 on hearing aids. The wife got each of us some she googled them. 650.00 for a pair rechargeable and they work great. I just looked for them to find the brand name. They are out in the pickup. If I remember tomorrow I will see if I can find the brand name on them.

when i was a teen, we were hunting and a friend was to my right and behind me, he saw a bird fly up and blasted it from behind me, i couldn't hear out of that ear for many, many years. to this day it is still below the level the other one is. and like what Joe says, it does good with sounds and lips flappers that don't really need to be heard! Tom...are those the ones from Sams Club?

Gonna forewarn on the Generic Low Ball aids, they will work fine for a short period then additional hearing loss will develop.  They are strictly Amplifiers, they will work as they turn up the volume but do not address the issue.

I went to a licensed audiologist and the range of tones I could or could Not hear, they tuned a set of aids just for what I cannot hear where the remaining tones are not amplified.  That is the difference between $600 and $2000 aids.  Go completely deaf as the old style aids drive it that way or accept the expense to recover only what need.

I spent the money, made me mad as all get out but in over a year have actually turned them DOWN not up as to volume for the pitch tone I need to hear.  My phone answers thru them, I can turn them on and off on my phone, can direct the sound area for better clarity in a crowed noisy room.  Tried the low cost type first, did 'OK' but not well and was experiencing head aches at night trying to get to sleep after took them out.  I also have tinnitus or ringing in my ears, the dialed in tone level muffles or covers the ringing where the generics did not.  Biggest gripe was Insurance would cover the damn generics but not the better version, they do not care if the little tools deafen the patients.

I guess from time to time I act like I hear something that I did not hear. I do that so people don’t have to repeat. Bad habit I recon.
I don’t watch tv I just read. It isn’t that big a problem to me but in all honesty it’s causing problems at home and work.
I’ve grown to really appreciate texting.

If you are a veteran, check with the VA. When I was first diagnosed with hearing loss I got a price from the audiologist and after picking myself off the floor I thought I'd check around for a better price. Just on the off chance I checked with the VA to see if they would cover them, and lo and behold they did. The nice part is they furnish the batteries at no cost. I just ordered and received a 6 months supply yesterday. They also repair them at no cost and give you new ones every five years. What a deal! I guess it was worth my couple of years with Uncle Sam.

I have a question. Why in the world is there a setting possible on the hearing ad that make them squeal like a dropped guitar at a rock concert? Seems that could be avoided.

I don’t know the answer but I must admit that is part of my reasoning for not wanting these gadgets.

I've always wondered..... does the person wearing them hear that terrible squeal, or is it just those who are nearby?

Hahahaha....

Well, I don't wear them. At least not yet. I've heard the horrible squeal from my grandfather's, now my mom's. When you tell mom, she says yes she hears it, but doesn't know how to fix it. Then dad turns them down a little.

Just goofy, why would that be a setting that's actually functional if it causes such a squeal!?

Little off topic, but wife and I always argue about which one of us is going deaf. I knew that it was her, so I talked to an audiologist about it. He said do a little test on her. Some time when she doesn't know that you are behind her, see how loud you have to talk before you get her attention. So next day when I came in for dinner, she was facing away from me, standing over the stove cooking. In my normal voice, I asked, "honey, what's for dinner?" No response. So, a little louder, I asked her again what was for dinner. Still no response. So, just shy of shouting, I asked the same question one more time. She turned around and replied, "For the third damn time, I said roast beef and mashed potatoes!" I had nothing to report back to the audiologist. Lol! Darrel

Even with ear protection after working around jet engines for 36 years I have over 70% high frequency hearing loss plus 30% and over in all ranges so eventually I may get some from the VA. I think I can hear okay but probably because I don't know what I am missing (might not want to know either).

The squealing is caused by feed back in the hearing aid.  The output is too high and feeds back into the input.  Mine do that if I have ear muffs on or hand over ear will also cause that.

Well of course it's feedback, hence the guitar reference.

And sure, if muffs or a hand or something, that's understandable. But why have it possible for "too high output" when mom is sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee???

Besides, it was a joke anyway.

Know all too many that had feedback whistle or shriek, Mine at this time do not do that with muffs on or not.  I use a headphone/ear muffs radio when I mow, volume gets set down where still can hear it and not quite so bad as before the aids.  The ones I received are Phonak.  Opted for the custom molded ear inserts as had custom molded ear plugs at the power station where were quite comfortable for long durations.  These are as well.

LOL!!  My wife would look at me sitting watching TV and me reading, I would say "What", she would say Buzzer is going off.  I would get up go turn it off and pull dinner from the oven or eggs off the stove or my laundry from washer or dryer.    Could NOT hear the buzzers.

New ears will look at her, she says "What", her phone is ringing and I hear it so tell her, I get a No Its Not, as she meanders towards it.

If you can get into the VA system, get-r-done!  My first round with them got me 20% on hearing loss and tinnitus recognized, both service related.  I think that's the biggie, you have to be determined as service related.  Then you don't pay for the service related items/visits, etc.  I got in the system shortly after service because I and my Drs knew how much toll on my body my 20yrs in the military did.  Once in the VA system, I believe you can be seen for any medical but if not service related, you must pay for the care like any Dr/Hosp visit (don't quote me on that, it changes quite a bit).
I helps in leaps and bounds if you have copies of your medical records when you served, and proof (via those records) your hearing was going down hill at those times, ie those yearly hearing tests.  Give 'er a try, cost nothing to try.  Also recommend you do it with the help of the DAV or American Legion, it's free and they have the experience/knowledge on the tons of paperwork and language.
