All of us need to warm up our tractors and check the PTO housings for water or ice. It's surprising how much water collects in the housing over time and if let freeze will split the casing. Just pull the little square headed plug and let a little gear lube out, the water will be on the bottom after setting and comes first. I always remember (well almost) to check the coolant, but is easy to forget this one little thing!

My father in law has an international H that he doesn't use very often, so it is usually dead when he goes to start it. One time he had the great idea to park it on the hill up from the house, so he could roll start it when he needed it. Well, it had water in the tranny or rear end like you're taliking about, and it froze up. He went to start it early in the spring when the water was still froze, so when he put it in neutral to start it rolling down the hill, it wouldn't budge. Guess he figured that since it wouldn't move, no need to put it back in gear. About two weeks later when things warmed up a bit, it was a good thing the swather was parked between it and the house, or I may have had an H in bed with me. It mated a little with the swather, but not too much damage was done. So yes, dipstick, water does accumulate in large quantities in gear cases. Darrel
