I am in need of information regarding an old Allis Chalmers HD9 crawler with an 8' fixed Baker blade. I have seen articles that suggest this was an experimental unit, with only 5 built. I am hoping to find a way to confirm the accuracy of this information. Does anyone know of manufacturing records or other sources, where information of this type can be found? I believe the tractor was built in Springfield IL. Also, where would the serial number be located on this tractor?
Thanks |

Rusty, I cant help with the fixed blade story, but yes, the dozers for Allis were built in the Springfield Illinois plant. Portions of that plant were from the late 1800s and several buildings were added or updated over the years. They built the HD9 and 11s there in the 1940s- 50s... They built HD 16s for Viet Nam in the 1960-70 era... Last they built HD 21- 31 and the 41B up till about 1985. The entire contents was taken overseas to Italy after that. Fiat Allis was the name as FIAT had a large portion of the ownership $$. Anything they did not take was sold as scrap steel. The building was leveled and gone now. Has fast food / mini mall / businesses in the several block area today.

Baker was the manufacturer of the blades and I think at some point Allis bought Baker out and added that to their line........... that was common for Allis to buy up the suppliers and smaller manufacturers.

I understood that more than 5 were built, they were used in the forestry in being able to load fast and push up dirt fast too with lots of under carriage room... and would say they were made specialty for orders... and not listed as standard listed. JMO
Seen pics of those units... Heres a short tube... read down in comments too....

Thank you all for your responses. The tractor in the tube clip is the
type for which I am seeking information. Based on comments after the
clip, it seems obvious there were more than 5 built.
Kinghunter, I do not have pictures or clips of the tractor I know of, but will get some in the next week. Rest assured though, it has not experienced the TLC received by the unit in the tube clip! ![]() |
