Hey! I was running my 57’ HD-6 this afternoon when I went to turn left I pulled the left steering clutch lever and pressed the brake pedal but the right track wasn’t spinning to turn the dozer. It turns for a second or 2 in reverse and it still drives and pushes straight but won’t turn going forward. I’m going to take a look through the 2 plugs in the steering clutches tomorrow morning but in the meantime if anybody knows anything or has any recommendations I’d really appreciate it! Alot of things could of happened. It worked the last time you tried it? Or it is knew to you? Try adjusting the steering clutch. If you don't have a book or have not done it before, lots of free travel of the lever is the first sign it needs adjustment. I forget what the AC adjusting is but it is inside the case. If there is adjustment on the external linkage leave it alone for now. A after market crawler parts place has been putting parts books on line don't know about service or operator books. But put General Gear in a search should find the place. But you could have all kinds of things broke as well.
A HD 5 which has the same rear end from transmission back as a HD 6 like your was used as a battering ram. A drive shaft broke inside but did not happen until days of use latter.
I had what I thought was a rather sudden loss of one track pulling on a Cat D6. The springs lost most tension to make the one steering clutch pull. Was working on a moderate pull, going a bit steeper, pull one clutch and it stopped moving. I still don't see how that happened so sudden. |

Awesome, thank you for the lead! It happened in just one split second. I was pushing a dirt berm and went to turn left and all the sudden the right track wouldn’t move. There doesn’t seem to be any more than a inch play in the control lever. So I’m thinking either driveshaft or clutch springs are shot. It turned flawlessly the pass before it went out. I’ll update you on the HD tomorrow after I take a look. Thanks again!

there is no drive shaft - just a flange on each side of clutch / brake drum .
Inner flange is driven by ring gear - outer drives the first reduction gear . Do you have power to both tracks and what happens when you pull the lever for the opposite side - does machine move with power to one track ? Check the cultch case by removing the top cover plate to make sure it isnt full of grease , oil, water . Might be as simple as washing out housing with solvent . Had problems similar when friction disc would get oil on them (until i changed to HD 11 clutch plates with ceramic facing) Old fiber discs also can shear off drive tabs .

Hay I see your not that far away Andy, I do have several HD 5 rear ends sitting here.
Shock loads have always puzzled me. I had been told never release a Cat D6 steering to fly forward on it's own. As the steering clutch would break instantly. Digging in some slime my dad wanted to consult, so got off the Cat and got mud on my hands. Went back to digging and the leaver slipped from my slimey hands. Expected the worst, but it still pushed with both tracks. But within several hours it was not. The HD 5 loader was used to ram a large oak stump a number of times. We used the 5 to load large boulders I had dig with a dozer. Then used the loader to place the boulders into place in a creek crossing. It went to another neighbor building a house, don't know what they where doing my guess of 20 hour of use after the ramming it broke a short shaft in final drive housing. Hopefully cleaning and or adjusting is all yours needs.

The top of the page has steering clutch disc options, including the HD11/bimetallic discs Coke mentioned (much better than fiber discs). If you need discs and go bimetallic, I have enough used ones to do all or close to all of one clutch. PM me if you want them.
