I've driven by a dozer sitting back in a pasture for years and always wondered what it was. It kind of looked like an AC. I finally remembered to bring binoculars and sure enough, I could pick out the "11" on the side of the machine and the early Fiat-Allis logo above it. It looks a lot like this machine from another post I found on here when I was researching: http://allischalmers.com/forum/uploads/17858/20171114_161611.jpg The grille is identical. I could not see a "B" and I thought there was small script "HD" in front of the 11 but the paint is bad enough that it's hard to tell. Either way, from what I can tell this would probably date the machine to the early '70s?

I'll be the first to admit I don't know a ton about dozers. I put an afternoon on a Case 650 and that's it. I need more projects like I need more holes in my head, and an HD-11 would be bigger than I need. I have several ponds to fix/clean up so I'd been thinking about eventually getting a small dozer (more like HD-5 or smaller). Still, I'd hate to see this thing wind up getting scrapped, though. Even if it's too far gone there are probably some good parts on it. It's a mile from my house so I'm not going to find anything closer.

The way it's sitting in the pasture I assume something bad happened to it. If I can figure out who the owner of the pasture is, would scrap price/ton x 15 tons be a high-end offer for it? From what I have gathered looking around on here, parts availability is a big issue.

If nothing else, it would be interesting to see it up close and if you can talk to the owner, find out what the story on it is.  If asking around doesn't work, you probably access the county property records online and find out who owns the land and go from there.  Who knows, the reason it is there may have nothing to do with the machine or it could be a relatively easy fix.  At least it would be something to do these days when you can't do much!

Looked up the owners on GIS and they don't live around here. I might be able to find out who currently leases it for cattle. My guess is the dozer was either already sitting on the property if these folks have bought it in the last 10-20 years, or the HD-11 is owned by the current or a previous renter.

I could end up in a situation where the property owners say "sure, take it" and then some guy who rented the property 15 years ago and left the dozer there when it died notices it's gone and comes after me just because he can.

I guess I'll start with a letter to the property owners and go from there. Like you said John, maybe I'll at least be able to get a look at it and take some pictures.

I stand corrected... Took another look at it from the road tonight and what I thought was a Fiat-Allis logo is really a chunk of missing paint. It is very much an older HD-11 and says "Allis-Chalmers" along with having the AC diamond logo badge on the side of the grille, which I think means it's from '64 or earlier and probably harder to get parts for. I'll report back if I hear anything from the property owners.

These are the best pictures I could get from the road at the limit of my camera's zoom. Slight update - I figured out who rents the land, so I need to talk to them. They're at least local, and heck, they're probably the ones who left it there in the first place.

Doesn't look too bad, of course the insides are what count.  I wonder what the primer colored pipe thing on the top of the grill is for?  Hood and grill protection?  Looking forward to finding out "the rest of the story".

I may be mistaken but I can't see a cap on top of the muffler, that could be bad news.

I recently talked with the owner and got a chance to look at it tonight. Supposedly it sat for a couple of years and they went to get it going again and the engine was locked up. It sounded like that was a good decade ago.

It's a 1957 HD-11B and looked to have orange paint under the yellow. There's a winch on the back. The track tensioners look like they've been welded up at some point and the threads looked rough, but the undercarriage otherwise looks passable for a machine not working every day for a living.

My main concern is the engine, obviously. All of the engine kits I can find are for later serial numbers after 6427 (1961 or so?) with the 10000/11000 engine, not the original configuration Buda "HD-516" which this tractor presumably has. (Example of Reliance kit specified for later HD-11 engines here: http://reliancepowerparts.com/Product?productGuid=RP915157&partListId=3340)

Am I out of luck on new engine parts for this early version of the 516? Will any 10000/11000 kit internals be backwards compatible with this engine? Forgive my ignorance as I don't know much about the bigger AC engines.

Not Allis but some general reading for you

I did the rounds of this about 10 years ago with an Allis Forty Five grader and there weren't bodaceous amounts available then.  We lucked out on a short motor  at a closing down sale - never completed because they didn't find a set of heads - so watch those too.

And the injection pump is an American Bosch  PSB 6 - warnings around on making sure it isn't stuck BEFORE you try to turn the engine - or you're likely to break things that are in "unobtanium territory"
