I tore down the engine on my HD16 to overhaul,as it was using quite a bit of oil. I should have done more research first, come to find out, i have the early 16000 eng and kits are no longer available. This engine has the 3 valve head and 1 3/4 piston pin. After doing some research and many phone calls, i thought i could use a kit from a 16000H, which has a 2 inch piston pin, but the rods will not change over as the crank is different. I think the rod journal is larger.
anyways, I am in desparate need of a NOS kit . Some one out there has one or knows where one can be located. I would like to speak with someone who is very knowledgeable about the 16000 -21000 engines. Im considering what to do, have piston end of rod built up and resized to fit 2 inch pin (dont even know if that is possible), custom rods $$$, engine swap, $$$ and headache.
ANY INPUT APPRECIATED. I have some paying jobs available and a machine setting. I should mention this is a farm dozer, probably looking a 100 hrs a year use lol. I would also appreciate it if someone could supply me these specifications from a 16000H service manual
16000H engine
compression ratio
rod length- center to center
bearing bore
crank diameter @ mains and rods
width of rod journal
thank you
phone-ill call you back

Hector, i am in need of pistons, rings and sleeves as mine are well worn. I would really like to get new parts but used may be the only way to go. I would consider if they are in good condition but removing sleeves without damage may be difficult.

I would start in central California,  and cold call several of the New Holland and former AC crawler dealers out there. One call should get you some names. Florin Tractor in Sacramento may be able to help, also  Illini Construction Parts listed here has been great  for our needs. (HD-3 and HD-6). There are several people that advertise  Fiat Allis and Allis Chalmers in Rock and Dirt, and don't forget Cook Sales in Chilicothe, MO. One more opportunity may be the Sweeney Brothers in Minot and Bismarck , North Dakota.  Fargo and Minneapolis stores were sold last fall.  Sweenys sold many Allis and Fiat Allis crawlers.

Check "Andy's Engine Parts" on Ebay. He has a large collection of Allis engine parts and knows his stuff. He has a huge collection, give him a call. I think I have some pistons, but no sleeves. Contact me if nothing else works out. I use the 21000 in my HD-21, but have some 16000 parts.

Thanks for the input guys, i have tried Illini and several other engine kit dealers. The problem is these kits havnt been produced for 10 years is what i have been told. the early 16000 and 21000 use 1 3/4 piston pin. Only 16000H and newer kit are still available and use a 2 inch or 2 1/4 piston pin. I have a rock and dirt and am still making calls.

Hello I was just curious if you ever got your hd16 up and running. I currently own a Hd16m and just aquired another hd16 with only 2k of hours on it that was sitting for ten years, but I think either the starter is bad or the engine is seized do you now of anyway or place possible to grab and rotate the crank back and forth. I have original complete shop and service manuals and parts manuals. Also how did it go on finding sleave and other parts and the reason I asked is we might have to replace one sleave and piston ect. thanks

wow its been awhile since this post. yes, i was able to overhaul my engine and i have somewhere around 400 hours on it since overhaul, dont recall exactly havnt looked at the meter lately. dont use it as much in hot summer months. about the only place to turn the engine is from the fan. if you cant turn by hand, you can remove the starter and use a bar and try rocking it back and forth but dont get carried away and break the ring gear.
you can still find kits for these engines, youll just have to call around they are not a real popular item but the do exist. my problem was with the early direct inject 3 valve head engine, the pistons and rods were different than the later 1600H and 17000 engines. i was able to get sleeves , gaskets and rings from minnpar. pistons did not exist, so i had no choice but to reuse them, luckily they were still close to spec, just worn sleeves and rings.

I just rebuilt my 16b this past winter and Kevin at Illini got me everything I needed. Wish I could say the same for undercarriage parts.

I have a 1965 HD16DP with a turbo 16000 serial 0690. Number one exhaust port stays cold at idle and there are plenty of bubbles in the radiator. It will dump coolant at working RPM. I will try to re-torque the head when we get back to warmer weather in Iowa, but I suspect a sleeve is required or not above the block far enough so #1 head needs to come off. I would need the oring water seals as well. MinnPar had the gasket set. Looks like the ring seal for the sleeves are now part of the head gasket.

Norm: Is there a difference between the HD844, 16000, 16000H, 17000, 19000 and 21000 sleeves? I will probably need a sleeve for #1 in the 1965 HD16 DP crawler with a 16000H turbo-charged engine.
Second question: Can a sleeve be lifted from the top without pulling the piston should it need shimming to get .003-.005 above the block to seal?

all the sleeves dimmentionally are the same. minnpar has sleeves available. if you are putting sleeves into a 16000 or buda motor they need another o-ring groove cut into the sleeves above the existing ones. i ordered sleeves for my 16000 from minnpar and they sent them out ready to install. apparently on the early motors the water jacket is slightly shorter so in order to seal, the extra grove is needed, and you simply move all the o-rings up one spot. my 16 is a 59'. you should have 1600H in your 65' 16000H and up are all the same except wrist pin dimmentions and piston cooling for high hp motors
you need to make sure your sleeve will install freely without the o-rings first, and how will you compress the rings with the piston below deck? i dont see how it could be done Edited by CAL(KS) - 27 Dec 2015 at 8:38am |
