Went out on the back porch last evening and saw one mowing down some clover and weeds not 30 feet from are garden area. First one I ever saw around here in 30 years. SOB....... Wife had a headache and was asleep so I couldn't get a cannon out. I do have a 22 pellet rifle that's a bad a$$. Good at a quarter size at 40 yards.
Been about 95 the last few days with equal humidity, got the rifle and the scope fogged over and the whole gun started sweating like a beer can. SOB...wiped of the lenses with a snotty kleenex, all I had, and got a look at him. Cocked it and he was gone. I think this probably means war. Any one ate one of these things. My dad used to when he was a kid.
Supposed to be part of the squirrel family.

Fixer1958, Dad said the real young ones were good to eat. I personally am going to have to be very hungry to get to the point of eating one. We have them under most of the buildings at our tractor show grounds. Very disruptive critters! I may take the new .22 when I go to the grounds to mow today! Good luck! Regards, Chris |

They are vegetarians so I guess they'd be okay to eat, but I bet they would be loaded with fat. I don't think I could bring myself to dress one out, but after it was cooked up, I would try it. I use my 22 with a scope on it, and you gotta have it ready to go by a door or window. They usually do sit up a couple times when they are out feeding so that makes for an easy target. With this quarantine going on the wife is always around now and she don't want me to shoot that poor little critter! Pfffttt!

Keep your rifle handy and stay out of sight as much as possible, they have excellent eye sight. They will eat a row of green beans in 1 day, and go from cabbage to cabbage eating from each. How do I know? Just sent one to just reward last week.

I usedter hunt them, when I was younger, killing 95-100 of 'em per year was nuthin, to me. Bad knee has curtailed a lot of walkin, plus it takes a lot of time, to walk around lookin fer 'em, and mostly on 90+ degree days. I find their holes, and set conibear 160's on 'em, now, when they P me O... 
This vid shows setting a 220 or 240 for beaver, but setting a 160 is similar.
Also, take 1 dog tie out stake with you, per trap, and a clevis and small length of dog chain, and use to anchor the trap to the ground, so brer buzzard don't fly off with yer trap!

I've shot from the house many times. We have full screens on the windows. So I take the screen out and open window when I see one. I stick the barrel out a foot of the window, and whistle to them. They'll stand up and look around. Then bang. lol They used to live in the fields till the coyotes got so numerous. I've heard this time of year there good eating. Probably tastes like chicken.

If they taste like chicken then I'll just eat chicken. We found a ground hog skull when we were cleaning out a building at my in-laws. The front teeth were loose enough to pull out and those dang things are at least 2 inches long

Wonder if the Conibear trap will work on 'possum-on the half shell? Those things have become a pita around the farm and only come out late at night. I have shot a few and gassed a few.

We used to have lots of them around the shed and crib, not so much now. I never thought, I bet it is because of coyotes. Wish the coyotes would get better at possums and coons though, now they're the nuisance!!!

Caught two in the live trap last year, haven't seen any evidence of them so far this year. Coons are rampant around here, If they would leave the mouse bait alone I would leave them alone.

Had the same trouble with coons stealing the mice bait out of shed with combines in it, they dig under the doors that don't have a concrete approach under them, not to mention they took out a engine fan on one. Anyways the mice were rampant so I bought 6 bait stations and a 5 gal bucket of Bell Contrac, fixed the problem right quick. Just found something heavy like a used battery and sat on top the bait stations so the coons couldn't screw with them. It wasn't cheap but up to the coons stealing my bait I had never had mice in the cab of the combine and that p'd be off. I also think the Bell bait blocks are as good as it gets. Local coop couldn't get rid of rats in one of their elevators using tomcat, decon, etc and so they hired a pest company. The pest guy came and all he did was show up with a bucket of Bell Contrac and toss it around, problem over.
I might add I thought about trying some Bell Fastrac blocks to see if they might get rid of the coons that take them.
