Hey fellas,
Waking up this morning I was dreading the thought of having to yank the motor at worse to get the starter out of its cozy little area. Shoot I had it out in less then an hour, over thought how bad the job was gonna be. Next tore it apart and it was obvious from the rust why this thing wasnt working. And JC, on that foot engage pinion deal, or dyer drive I think, it was held together with one of four bolts and a cotter key for a 5/16" pin. Did some tapping, major cleaning and used a 6" stainless exhaust clamp to replace the rusted through band over the brushes. Thought that was a nice touch. It works now. Tommorow I'm ready to go for the start.
Some pictures, oh and guess which of the two dogs is the house dog.

Thats correct, I have some time to kill, causing no harm and having fun doing it. He listed it before I got a wild hair up my bung to make it run, so just donating time to the greater cause. And again it's fun!

Like that stainless ex. clamp... nice touch, I am going to have to remember that one next time. LOL
Funny what people do for improvising... like the cotterkey for a pin... LOL
Your getting there... One of these times you will have smoke rolling.
OB, maybe he is getting it ready for the next owner...? Maybe he wants to hear it run?

Just be careful. If I thought I was buying a complete non running HD7 with the clutch covers open, and arrived to pick it up, and found someone had been wrenching all over it, and breaking roll pins, putting exhaust clamps on the starter, and other stuff, since the pictures were taken, I would be pretty pissed off. It' not that you don't know what you are doing, seems you do, but I don't know that as the buyer, but I am no longer buying the machine I think I am.
I know you are doing it with the best of intentions, but now the machine is misrepresented in the listing. Once you post something for sale, IMHO you shouldn't touch it until the buyer arrives, or the listing expires.

Please keep us updated, I want to see the smoke too. Maybe the reason it didn't sell was it was listed as a book!

If you've got the starter together and ready to reinstall, I'd do that first and try it out with a snort (a very small snort) of either. It should fire on either and maybe keep running on fuel. It's a lot harder to take care of emergencies if it's being towed then just sitting. Be ready to pull the air cut off (make sure it works first) above the supercharger.
Hope you have some warm weather the rest of the week. |
