Greetings from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I am new to the forum and wanted to post my most recent purchase to share. An ED 40 that spent most of it's life at the Homestead Resort pulling a finish mower. It runs and seems like a solid candidate for a resto.I hope to learn all I can from you folks about this model farm tractor. I've included a picture.....

Welcome. It's nice to find a complete running ED40 Those have some unique problems that some that have them can help you with.

Yeah, IIRR, the most common major problem is that something in the lift breaks a casting...

Thanks for the heads up on the casting issue. Right now, I need to replace a steel hydraulic line before I can start it. It is missing all the 3 pt. hitch equipment. I hope that's not a bad sign of things to come. No draw bar either. The exhaust is also missing. Just the down pipe from the manifold.
I don't have big plans for the tractor. Maybe pull a mower once in a while. Parades and Steam and Gas shows. Something to tinker with in retirement.

Hello. The steel line runs under the fuel cell, down the top of the trans and seat. It’s rusted from rodent urine I guess. Easy fix. I can make one.
I do not have any manuals yet.

I always liked the ED40. Pretty robust units. There are a lot more of them here in Canada than there were in the US (like a lot of other British-built tractors, and the British-built AC square balers). Biggest issue I know of is them being very grumpy starters - especially in cold weather. I can't remember the details, but there were some glow-plugs that were used on a model of Nissan diesel that are apparently an easy retrofit into that engine, and make for much easier starting. Some of the Massey 35's had that same engine, made by the Standard Engine Company.

Hello Daniel, Grumpy starters are no fun. Thanks for the info. I have UK ancestry so it seemed like a good project. hahaha Once I get a manual for this rig, I hope I can figure out the different controls in the instrument panel. I think I read that it has glow plugs. All the labels are sun baked so bad that you can't read them. Oh well, all part of the project.

Hi I never heard that there is a service manuel for the ED 40. There is Parts manual and operator. For the Engine it is the Standard 23C , same than Ferguson 35 ( 835) also John Deer model 303 and 505 ( 303 and 505 are French designation , don't know if it is the same in America) and Leyland too So you can get service manual for these Tractor, same injection timing. The time is 13° advance.

I finally found a parts book. Very helpful.
I also sourced 3 of the 4 lift arm parts. Still need the Left side link rod.
