I know my Dad's bent gearshift late 1952  or 1953 WD had factory distributor ignition. Not the add-on style that bolted up to the mag drive.

So that would be quite early in 1954.

WD-45 production started at chassis s/n 146607 in summer/fall of 1953. WD's started distributors at 136318 which is also 1953 and about 10,000 tractors before the WD-45 started. Looks like no battery ignitions in 1952 according to the parts book. Sometimes mistakes are made, but that's what it says.

I checked the CA Parts Catalog:

Generator, Electric Starter, and Distributor all started at Engine Ser. 149840.

Couldn't find any Tractor Serial Number to correspond to this Engine Serial.

Checked Bryan Smyths 'Tractor Ser. - Engine Serial reference

Year     Tractor SN Range     Engine SN Range
1950     14 - 321           140553 - 141017
1951     322 - 10538           141018 - 156449
1952     10539 - 22180           156450 - 174033
1953     22181 - 31423           174034 - 187993

That indicates about mid 1951 for CA Distributor.

Dr.

Reading this Forums 'Serial Number Reference' Chart:

I get the same conclusion as WF.

1954 WD 1st 131243 last 160384, since early Serial Numbers posted are ending #s

Ser. 136318 falls in this range, so a 1954.

BUT the 'Serial Num. Ref.' states "** WD-45 production began at 146607 in 1953"

Something is not right. perhaps WD-45 started in 1954 ?

I have a picture of myself sitting on a brand new WD-45, with another one parked in view behind it.

This would have been when my father first started with his Allis Chalmers Dealership.

Unfortunately there is no date on the picture.

.

Just random data add:

1952 WD WF 125xxx with distributor on mag mount (suspect dealer/aftermarket)
1952 WD NF built two weeks before with magneto

First is the one I have now, bought a few years back. The other was my father's that we had when I was a kid that my brother has currently.

We tried getting our father's running but got the mag gears indexed wrong and need to get back to it.

Thank you all for the replies
My serial number is some what messed up on my tractor so the best I can tell it is either a 1949 or a 1951.
WD with a magneto and a straight gear shift lever.

Thank you again

This is all correct. Where the 1954 thing comes from I don't know. To expand a bit, the snap-coupler hitch became standard equipment at serial number 151381. I believe it was optional before that and many WD tractors have been retrofitted, I have one of those. Diesel engine production started at serial number 181341, 4 bolt wide front ends corresponding with this. I'm not 100% certain on this but pretty sure.

Couple other random thought on this as I'm paging through the bible; My Grandpa's WD that he bought new is 115xxx and came with a mag. and straight stick. It's still here but now has battery ignition I installed. On page 80 of Norm's bible there is a picture of a 45 with 15-28, (18.4x28) rice and cane tires that were a factory option. I mention this because there was some controversy at Hutch about my 16.9x28's being larger than "stock" tire size. There was also a diesel in the 5000 lb. farm stock with the same size tires. I don't remember him getting any flack about his tires but I digress. Maybe next year I should take the book with me and show them that picture?
