Imagine doing your morning Wordle (yes, I still do) when you get an urgent email from Netflix. The subject line? “Your subscription just expired.” Now, you don’t want to miss the latest episode of “The Crown” (yup, I’m still watching — too far in to quit now. Still no sign of Kate there, either!), so you click the link in the email and update your payment info.

After you dig a little deeper, though, you realize your Netflix account never lapsed, and you're now stuck with a fake charge and a crook running around with your personal info.

You wouldn’t be the first victim. Imposter scams cost Americans $2.7 billion in 2023. But now you get my newsletter, so you should know better! I put together these phishing red flags so you can avoid getting caught, hook, line and sucker.

A not-so-’urgent’ update

Scammers love to impersonate businesses everyone uses, like streaming services. They can make their emails look super legit, but these phishing scams still have telltale signs:

  • Direct payment: These emails almost always include links to input your credit card or bank account number.
  • “Act now” language: Scammers hope you’ll overlook the signs of a fake deal or discount by acting quickly.
  • Sketchy numbers: Oh, no! Your subscription or membership is about to auto-renew! … But the total renewal rate looks off. The email includes a phone number to “clear things up” — and that number goes straight to a fake customer service center.

Catch those ‘phish’

They think they know how to outsmart us, but I’ll help you beat them at their own game.

  • Review the actual email address, not just the sender’s name. If it looks off or unprofessional, send that email right to your spam folder.
  • Check for spelling and grammar errors in the text.
  • Cross-reference the info. Log into your account at the company’s website or call its official number — not the number in your inbox.
  • Keep a subscription calendar so you know when your purchases are set to renew or expire.
  • Never provide your payment info if you didn't initiate a purchase.
  • It’s not urgent. I promise. A legit business will never ask you to pay immediately with a bank account number, prepaid credit card, digital wallet app or money wire, especially if it’s your first notice!
  • Report all bogus emails as spam and delete them from your inbox.
  • Avoid clicking links in the email.

Pro tip: Check the BBB’s Scam Tracker to see if there’s a similar scam to the one you’ve received, or report your fishy email as a new one.

The above is from a site by Kim Komando - a computer guru who puts out a free news letter - lot of good info on her site - as well as her radio show .

Wife and Sis in Law nearly fell for similar, called me as to how all is billed as ATT wanted a Updated Pay system, was a Total Scam.  Next Up, phantom Wife or Sis in Law emails to ME, except the Visible on PC address to respond to is west Niger or Bulgaria, another SCAM.  Chase, AMEX, Paypal all of the CC or Pay online, even the grandiose Google or Microsoft companies have Clones out there.

Then is this, Buddy of mine where last worked was having Home PC issues, wife also worked so NO ONE at home. Called his IT Geek brother, explained problem and would get hold of him that evening to look at it.  His Bother stated, NO Problem, told to Hold the line.  Ten minutes later gets back on phone and says All Fixed.  DO NOT "Need" Passwords to get into our Home PCs, or Phones or any Computerized Any Fixture, are backdoors WIDE OPEN All Day Every Day, just have to know where they are.

His Recommend, EVERY Night unplug Phone or Cable to Internet provider, EVERY Night or long period away from home.  Turning off Power does little to Nothing, Pull Electrical supply plug when Leave for Vacations.  NOTHING NEEDS to be Computer Controlled, Not Lights, TVs, NOTHING to dissuade Thieves burglarizing the home, Only Impromptu Visitors on No Schedule will dissuade while away.

PCs are a BAD deal for WiFi outside Connections and being used as step off pads for Scammers.
Our latest problem was my I-Phone, spoke to that same IT geek, Even with a Passcode and Facial Recognition, DUMP EVERY access link and Password in the phone log, EMPTY the Phone of Critical electronic accesses.  That is THE ONLY way to stop tampering or pandering or outright Open Thefts.  Same guy accessed My Phone from MN St Paul and left me a Message in my Own Address List, Phone has Passcode, Facial Rec Programs and was Turned OFF.  Took him LESS THAN 10 minutes,  he does security for Industrial Clients.
All the games programs as to passwords, codes, whatever are there to keep the simpler minded immediate hackers out, the Big Guns could care less.

Seems first give away if by chance you open a e-mail by mistake is to look atthe IP or domain name it was sent from . I can't understand why a bank or such would use a Google e-mail or how a US bank would have a address ending in uk or au
many times when hovering over a e-mail the senders address will show and the first give away to SCAM shows .

Have to laugh at that too!!!  Received call for my Nephew, by a police department, odd part of it, Jeffrey been dead since 2006.  So let the moron rattle on, asked if spoke Spanish said No, asked if spoke Greek, said NO, then asked if spoke Nigerian or Somalian, Said What is it you are saying, called the person on the line a @$#%@^@&@@&&( and the Magic N Word, it started screaming at the phone and I hung up.  I have had no calls as that since either.
