We used dog proof traps at my buddies hunting camp . Cheap cat food , marshmallows and peanut butter. We had some problems with mice Cleaning up the bait. Place a golf ball over the top after placing bait. Mice cannot move the golf ball but the coon / possum can. Removed 11 coons and 15 possums last fall . Trying to get rid of nest raiders . Turkeys don't stand a chance hatching eggs with all these egg eaters. Mostly one or 2 night sets. Cannot check them during the week and if I cannot check daily, will not leave traps set.

I use a live trap in the barn.
The problem is cats get caught instead of the coons. Open the trap and the cat shoots out like greased lightning. Since I put the trap into a trash can, I am catching less cats. |

I used the small marshmallows to catch 47 coon in a year and 3 young ones at once another year. Best to start culling the herd early in the year!

There is no wrong time to trap a racoon! But, getting them this time of year does slow down the next generation! Saw one out in the neighbors field Monday when I was planting corn. Knew I was pushing pretty hard to get done before dark so I had to leave him alone. Don't kn ow what he was doing but he was lout there for over an hour! If I had time to go get a gun, he'd be dead!

47 coons took all summer to catch. In that time I also caught a possum or two and a skunk but never a cat. Small marshmallows for the win.
