    Posted: 11 Sep 2010 at 10:54pm
dad and i have had a wd 45 we bought from family a few years now.   Seems we are finding more uses for the tractor everyday.  we dont actually farm anymore,  all the land is rented,  so our tractors do other work and so on.   anyhow,  the allis has an issue taht is becoming a safety problem.   We discovered a year or so ago that in second gear under a good load(read plowing)  it doesnt want to stay in gear,  it pops to nuetral.   all other gears seem fine.   pulling trees the other day up an incline,  it did it to dad again, and he barely got the tractor stopped before going into a 7 ft deep creek bed.   just lost a friend to a tractor accident.   would like to have dad around a while longer.    I took the shifter housing apart to check out the problem.   rails and forks in real good condition.  the detent balls and springs are good, but i replaced the second gear ones as they popped out on inspection.    My shift housing has some vertical slop that i have eliminated a good chunk of by adding an extra snap ring.  looking at the gears they are pretty clean, but the 2nd and 3rd gear seem to have quite a bit of side play on the shaft, and about 1/32 in. gap between the gears.   The play bothers me a bit, and when i looked at another at salvage today, it was tighter , but not what i think it should be.   i need a good idea of what tolerances i should expect and what the gears should really look like,   i have some concerns where the slider goes over the end of the gears.   any help would be appreciated.

thanks much, and god bless,

also, to stir things up more.   after i put it back together,  i had no problem moving the log that caused the problem yesterday,   we hooked to a tree, and she quickly dug a hole trying to pull the tree out, and didnt pop out of gear.   we got brave and hooked the 3 bottom to it, and within 20 ft it popped out of gear.   if dad holds onto the shifter, nothing happens.  let go of shifter and it pops  out again.   1st and 3rd plow just fine.

got any ideas

These trans don't have any too much contact on the shift couplings.Over time with some gear grinding it becomes even less.3rd is usually shifted in less than the others as far as coupler travel goes.In each gear, try to push the lever "deeper" than the detent position. If it moves farther into gear then that indicates you can modify the detent notch in shift rail to get fuller engagement.Usually grind notch over and add a little weld to opposite side of old notch. This will get you maximum engagement and may "fix" your problem. The top shaft (mainshaft) has end play of stacked gears set with snap rings of different thicknesses.End play on cluster shaft (bottom) is set with snap ring also.Only way to change is split tractor.Loose or bad bearings on either shaft can aggravate staying in gear. You may have to replace the shift collar(coupler)as well as 2nd gear it shifts onto to fix it but try the shift rail mod for full engagement first.Pay attention/make notes as to how the forks are positioned before dissasembly so you get it all back together right.Easy enough to pull the top off and try it.Good luck!

steve,

thanks for the reply,   what you posted was along the lines i was thinking,  but felt i must be overlooking something else.   I have fabricated for years so moving the notch is not much of an issue.   i presume i need to basically just move the notch to where the fork  basically forces more gear contact.   Got any idea of how far i need to move?   also,  do the interlock pins have anything to do with this, and how are they supposed to work.

many thanks,

Kinda educated guess on amount to move notch.Trial and error. You could do the math so to speak.Measure extra travel at top of lever, figure lever ratio and compute travel on fork needed.Want to end up with fork holding collar fully engaged but not riding groove so as to wear fork.Simple huh?Interlock pins have no bearing on this.Once one rail has moved out of neutral the others are locked out...doesn't matter where rail stops.Been a while...moved 3rd about 1/8in but 4th was ok.Might have moved 2nd but not much and I'm sure 1st was ok. Jump in with both feet...not that hard!
