 Topic: XT190 sitting for 20 years

About to getting stuck into changing all the fluids & filters on this XT190 I bought earlier in the year. Has not been running for 20 odd years. Has been shedded so that is a start. Does anyone know of any obscurities to look out for after they have been sitting this long I need to check before we start or drive it?

If it has not been touched in 20 years, I would drain the entire fuel system including the pump, flush out the tank and refill with fresh fuel. Also prime the pump and lines. Make sure the engine is not stuck, check the oil, see if there is coolant in the radiator.
Once all those check out, then I would try cranking it. If it starts, let it run for a few minutes, then shut it down and drain the engine oil. If it doesn't start or doesn't run well, the injector pump might be due for a rebuild.
Nice looking tractor. Even has the traction booster drawbar!

I recently picked up one that sat for a long time (appx 15 yrs) also. I did all the above, started with ease (and a shot of starting fluid)(and 2 new batteries...LOL). One thing I found when I pulled out the air filter was a mouse had made a huge nest in it. Sure glad I changed it before starting it up... could have been bad sucking all that stuff up. I also changed out all fluids and new filters. She also had a rough idle, found 2 of the injectors loose as well as some of the exhaust manifold bolts loose. Those tightened, she ran surprisingly smooth. I've run it some now, finding lots of leaks that need addressed, changed out some hyd. hoses yesterday. On my first run with her she blew the front seals out of the water pump, that was fun miles from no-where.... good thing there was a lake nearby. I need to pull out the pressure washer for a good cleaning so I can pinpoint some leaks under her. Always something to do with these old gals, sure glad I enjoy working on them. Wiring is a mess, might get to it before freeze-up.

Thanks for the advice guys. Original owner used it with large inline AC disc and a hydraulic adjustable AC discs hence the traction booster drawbar. They bought them all new including a Model C Gleaner I also got from them as well. Pretty neat that I am only the 2nd owner on both. Looking forward to getting it going. All the best.

also... check the bellhousing/clutch ares for a HUGE 'mouse house' !! My 1st D-14 had a 'mouse apartment' inthere....100% jammed FULL of 25 years worth of seeds,wtigs,leaves, etc.... took me 4 hrs to get rid of it AFTER I'd split the tractor.... ah, teh good old days...
hmm, any snakes live in bellhousings ??? or spiders ??? I hear you got LOTS of them 'down under'.

Richard, where do you find these nice projects? I had no idea AC had shipped tractors down under. Interesting, and I can’t imagine what you have to go through to get parts. Since it was inside hopefully she isn’t seized up. I would pull the starter and use a crow bar to make sure the engine is loose by turning the flywheel.

Thanks Jay for the tip will definitely have a look. Yes we have some pretty deadly snakes and spiders down under! If you keep things pretty tidy around the farm its helps keep them away.

G'day Robbie, thanks for the message. Its mainly word of mouth finding these projects. Plus we don't have snow so being a drier climate that helps keep most things in good condition. AC machines were sold here down under pretty much the whole time AC made farm machinery. None of the snap coupler stuff came here as the main importer made implements themselves. As AC was not very big here there are limited collectors so that probably helps me. The tractor is not seized so that is a start. In terms of getting parts I have to order from the US. Good point Calvin, a small part of our state of Victoria in the NE does get a fair bit of snow but vast majority of state doesn't. Glad you know the lay of the land. We live in the central region which does get very wet during winter here so if things are in sheds they survive okay. The N & NW of the state stay pretty dry and warm so old tractors and machinery last pretty well. That's the area I recently found a mint condition Model U. Have spoken with Stephen on the phone but not met him as yet. Let me know if you ever get out here again. I want to get over to Orange Spectacular when travel returns to normal!

That's a great find, you don't see all that many 190XT's out here and with such low hours! I know of another single owner 190XT that has around 4500 hours in NSW.

Good to hear from you Travis. It is a great find with low hours. I believe the family may have imported the tractor & a Gleaner Model C direct themselves. Gason cab is basic but makes it look good. Looking forward to giving it a run.

I would be thinking they bought it from the agent here as the other low hour one has a Gason cab on it and the owner relayed to me the buying process from the Australian head office in Newcastle in 1970 as he wanted to add some options and have them factory fitted. It has a side mounted belt pulley, 4 pinion differential (instead of a 2 pinion), Traction Booster Drawbar, and larger front and rear tyres. The Gason cab fitted to his is different to yours and he fitted his after taking delivery.
