Was working on bee equipment yesterday, big ol air compressor started and made funny sound, by the time I got stuff lay'd down and turned around flames were shooting out of the motor. Filled the whole shop with stinky smoke. Took it to the motor repair shop today, their gonna call next week with estimate. Motor has a 1963 date on it. Darn post hole digger I bought might need a new PTO shaft, probably a couple hundred locally. Was supposed to be fixed or new one here today. Didn't happen. Gotta have to set 5 - 6x6 before the concrete guys get here next Sat. Oh well told the old gal to buy a lottery ticket today, might get lucky and win enough to help out.

Good idea! If you win the lottery millions, you can have a sale and get rid of everything then go out and buy new stuff. Unless, of course, you just retire and sit around posting on the AC forum.

Just think how much more efficient that new motor will be over that 1963 model. That air compressor will start paying you money to run it!

When my compressor did that, it was Harbor freight here i come. It had been quite a while without use. I took it apart just for grins. dang mud dobber had built a nest right on top of the contactor/relay for the start windings. So they stayed engaged and things got

I just went through this with an old drill press that I restored. ebay to the rescue. I got a US-made (Baldor) motor delivered to my house for under $100.
There are lots of motors on ebay, many of them are very heavy duty. You can save tons, especially if you use three phase. There are lots of 110 and 220 motors on there also.

Yep Stan I figured the same. Got the old 1 rewound, new bearings, etc. Cost was less than $500.00, thats $10.00 per year but should last me and 1 son the rest of our lives. Darn kelvar belts were $30.00 each. I did get a field disk twice, field cult twice, and harrowed once. Should be able to seed it Sat, afternoon if'n ol shameless don't dump on us again. Got the 5 - 14' long posts set for the addition on the building. Now I gotta wait on the cement boys. Gotta get the old plastic greenhouse tore down tomorrow and go to Des Moines to help the old gal set up for a flea MKT tomorrow. Then again I might get that seeding done tomorrow afternoon if daylight holds out.

I bought a heavy duty post hole digger with a new, never used 12" auger fairly cheap because the pto shaft was stuck. Figured I had plenty of time and elixir to free it up, after 3 months of squirting, heating beating and then outrite cussing I ended up ordering a new yoke, tube and U-joint from Mills Fleet Farm out of Iowa. They had the same thing at Tractor Supply just 6 miles away but the cost was $189 as opposed to $89 I paid with shipping. I ended up ordering another U-joint as I let a couple needle bearings get bound up but still came out money ahead.

Yeah, I spent more in one day than my job will net me all year. And I am a teeny tiny farmer. A buddy of mine is putting in 1,800 acres of corn. He scoffed at my seed corn bill. LOL! Wonder how much better off I would be to, instead of using my operating loan to buy seed and fertilizer and such, to just take that money to Vegas and dump it into the machines. ...? Darrel
