I have a Ford 555D backhoe. I am not getting voltage from the ignition switch to excite the alternator. I do have voltage leaving the switch on the designated wire but it never makes it to the alternator. The same wire supplies voltage to the “accessories”. None of the trouble lights in the panel light when the ignition is turned to the on position. I do have voltage to the panel. I have tested the bulbs with ohm meter and they test good. I checked all fuses with ohm meter and they are good. I was hoping someone on here possibly had the same problem and could help me out. One other bit of info when I put voltage to the alternator to excite it with a jumper wire the battery voltage increases from 12.0V to 13.5V and the tachometer works when the jumper is installed.
Thanks, Avery I know this site is dedicated to AC equipment but I also know there is a world of knowledge on here…if this type post is not allowed, please forgive me and I will know better in the future. |

If the indicator bulb has power from the switch and power "going out of it" to excite the alternator, it sounds like a broken wire or bad connection between the bulb and landing point of that wire on the alternator/regulator end as the alternator is the ground for that bulb.

i think you have proven your point with the jumper wire... A hot wire leaves the ignition switch and some where there are 2-3 wires connected together to feed the HOT to the alternator / lights / accessories..... They either join inside the harness, or on a terminal on the dash, etc...... i would look for that POINT... wire is broke, corroded, or damaged..

if you cant find the wire or splice, or terminal connectiion.... another option is to remove the power wire from the switch and run TWO new wires from the switch HOT to the dash lights and the alternator signal .... just lay the new wire on the old harness and tape to it.

I have contemplated running a new wire from the switch to the alternator to excite it. I had not considered a second wire to the instruments. As per Jim.ME I would also need a way to ground the instruments?

The same wire supplies voltage to the “accessories”. None of the trouble lights in the panel light when the ignition is turned to the on position. I do have voltage to the panel that does sound like a bad ground .. a jumper from a CLEAN BOLT, back to the frame would serve as a ground... need to test with jumper to see what works..
I do have voltage to the panel....that wire from the switch might not run ONLY to the alternator.. Could be a splice inside the harness, or a terminal on the panel somewhere that it connects to 2-3 OTHER wires to feed the dash lights, and alternator... and maybe other ?

I grounded the wire that we have been discussing at the alternator with the ignition switch on. The alternator warning light came on. So just to satisfy my curiosity I reconnected the wire to the alternator and the light came on. I started the tractor, the light went off and the tach started working just like it is supposed to. But none of other lights came on … like oil pressure for example. So now I have another gremlin to chase. Thanks for everyone’s help
