Two things: #1. Operators do not check the oil often enough. #2. Those sight glasses, while convenient, get foggy and people sometimes think they see oil when they are not.

Agree on those sight glasses getting foggy. On a neighbour's 7080 I helped him with several years ago (stuck priority spool) I replaced the top one with a drain cock I had from an old HPU. Threads are a standard NPT size if I remember right. That way he'd just crack it open to check - just like the oil level check draincocks in old IH's/Farmalls. Told him to ignore the bottom. At our Northern farm with so many steep hills I always suggest folks overfill their trans, rear ends, etc a little so they don't starve doing long runs on our crazily steep side hills.
Had a few minutes waiting around the barn for a customer to show up, so I drained the fluid and shoved an endoscope down the fill plug. Couldn't get it oriented well enough to see much. Ring, pinion, and carrier 'looked' normal, and I could see where one of the cross shafts was in the carrier and nothing looked horribly awry, but it was a pretty lousy picture. Might have some time off in a couple weeks, so I'll bring the gantry to that barn in preparation of tearing into it. Edited by DanielW - 24 Jul 2026 at 7:24pm |

In May of 1981, my Uncle blew a hydraulic line on our 7040; then tried to drive home. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't until August before the spider gear cross shaft actually broke, while I was running it. Naturally I got the blame. When we got it apart, the spider gears chewed through the shaft, until it finally snapped. Without oil, it doesn't take long to break through the hardness, then it's just a matter of time.

I do fondly remember when changing from the newer style (long 3/8" bolt) to the older overlapping cross spider, the old planetary shafts were too long. This was discovered when the first axle housing assembly was installed and the trumpet housing bolts snugged up by hand (NOT with an impact wrench). So, I used 3 mounting bolts and snugged them up equally, then measured the air gap with feeler gauges and then ground off (DeWalt 4 inch grinder) the inside end of the each sun gear shaft as needed plus another .040" to .050" so it was a loose fit. We used a garden hose to keep things cool on the shafts end. BEWARE !! If this had been assembled with an impact wrench, bad things would have happened.
