If a starter has a dead spot, will the bendix stay in the flywheel and lock the motor?

How do you test for a dead spot?
This is on a B. 6 volt starter with a 12 volt battery.

the problem i have had is the bendix it self.... either the throw out screw is gummy or rusted so it sticks... or the spring is broken.... but always a good idea to pull the starter apart, clean up the commutator bars and file the brushes flat again..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
