When setting the gear mesh on a D19 ring and pinion what do you guys do when you measure the pinion bearing and it calls for a snap ring smaller or bigger than the.177 or .191 thousandths snap ring ?

In almost 50 years I have never changed that main shaft snap ring on anything. The snap ring thickness is determined by a number stamped on the rear end housing. Leave it alone unless there is more to the story than you're telling.

I will be replacing the ring and pinion in a D19 and will be replacing the double bearing. I’ve measured the old one when I took it out and don’t come close to the specs, my measurement is.157 thousandths.old bearing actually feels good but I really don’t want to have to do it over so I’m going to replace the bearing and not use the old one. Pinion gear and ring gear have galling on them so that’s why I’m replacing them. Hopefully this information helps, trying to be prepared for the measurement being different ahead of time. I’m sure you knowledgeable guys have run into this before and know some great ideas. Thank you

I remember replacing one D-19 ring and pinion back in 1979 or 1980. Never measured or worried about that snap ring. Tractor was quiet in road gear. All was good.

An old guy once showed me a good way to make pretty sure the ring and pinion will be reasonable quiet in road gear. Once the transmission is assembled and the differential is installed and shimmed properly (I'd shoot for .010" to .012" backlash not .006") grab the ring gear on the bottom and spin it with your hand (trans in neutral). There cannot be any feeling of teeth clicking by each other. Nothing. It has to be smoooooth.

Ok thank you I will definitely do that Dr. any suggestions on the amount of drag on the pinion shaft after I install the new double bearing?

Light drag but cannot "spin" easily.  Compare to your old one. Too tight could go bad as in road gear it spins 2,200 RPM.
