A quick question; Is a WD45 (4") head the same as an early D17 head?

It will interchange, but the intake valves are different between the heads.

I have my D-17 head at the machine shop. They just called and said the head is junk. I have a WD45 4" head on the shelf. I have a complete new valve train that says "Allis Chalmers 226 (G226) Gas, LPG Valve Train Kit".
Do you think this head/valve set will work on the (1959) D-17?

A "W-226" is a WD45 engine and has 45 degree intake valves. A "G-226" is a D-17 engine and has 30 degree intake valves. Don't know what your parts are.

What's wrong with the head? Is it cracked? Been ground too many times?
I'd bet there's somebody here that has one for pretty cheap.... |

If it is being condemned for cracks at the spark plug holes?? Tell them to ignore those cracks. Never seen one that didn't work just fine that way.

The tractor had set with the exhaust uncovered and, of course, rain water ran down into #2 cylinder. He said the head is rusted really bad around the valve guide and is too badly deteriorated to hold the guide.
As I said above, I have a WD45 head on the shelf (hopefully it is a good head!), but if anyone has a D-17 head at a reasonable price, I am interested. Otherwise, I will probably just buy the intake valves for the W head and use it. Edited by WF owner - 01 Nov 2018 at 6:03pm |

If I remember correctly, I have some NOS valves for the 201/226 heads. I’ll take a close look to see just which ones they are after I get home from work later today.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

I have rebuilt WD45 heads on the shelf. New valves, guides, springs, keepers, and expansion plugs. Tested for cracks and machined on the head and intake surface. $350.00.

"A "W-226" is a WD45 engine and has 45 degree intake valves. A "G-226" is a D-17 engine and has 30 degree intake valves. Don't know what your parts are." Is Dr Allis talking about valve seat angle here and if so, can't the valve seats just be ground to match the valves you have?

doubt the seat would have enough material in the right area to get the contact point where it should be....guess you wouldn't know till you tried it or at least looked it over carefully before hand
