I have recently gotten a D17 I believe a series IV and the lift arms will lift a mower and a 9' rear blade but will not lift my plow. The arms do drift down very slowly. I am thinking the internal lift cylinder packing/seals and or the hose going to the cylinder. Did the hose and cylinder when I was a kid on our D15 series II with my dad. Don't remember a whole lot about it. Is it a horrible job to do if that is the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I thought the lift cylinders on a Series 4 were on the outside. Are the hydraulic controls on the right hand side of the tractor or behind the steering wheel? If behind, then it is not a series 4. Den

Series IV D-17 Hyd cylinders (plural there was one on each side) were on the outside!

OK, from the descriptions this must be a series III. The lift lever is under the traction booster lever which is in the lowest position. There is a control valve/lever on left rear by the remotes.

Sounds like what mine was doing, before it quit entirety. As you mentioned, mine need both a new internal hose and the elbow was cracked.
It's an easy job too. Took maybe 2-3 hours, and that was going slow taking my time as I had never been in one.

If it is hose or cylinder, rear end dip stick will be showing over full. Sounds more like a weak pump . MACK

Tried using remote hydraulic connection on 10' transport discs. It lifted them no problem. And they stay up no drift. So I don't think pump is the problem. Yet the lift arms when raised do drift down. Really leaning on the lift arm cylinder and or hose. Any more thoughts? I really appreciate any responses!

You say there is "a control valve/lever on the left rear by the remotes". Remotes to me means more than one coupler, and a D-17 of that age only has one coupler, not two. So, I think you have an operational problem, a two-way valve and/or the previous owner has it plumbed up wrong. If you aren't losing hydraulic fluid and gaining transmission oil, there isn't a problem with a hose or seals internally !!! A picture would be very helpful.

The control valve lever I mentioned in an earlier post is the transport valve. Sorry our D15 didn't have one. I am learning! Hooked into the other quick disconnect and tried lifting discs (10' transport) and it works great. Just the lift arms wont lift the plow up more than a couple inches. I am thinking still the pump is fine or it wouldn't lift the discs. Maybe I am wrong. Will post a couple pics tomorrow.

A transport valve does not have a lever on it. It only has a knob. MACK

There are 2 disconnects on a valve with lever. To the right is a single disconnect. I think someone put the second one on the left, not sure.

Now, that we have established there actually is an "added-on two-way valve" (non-factory), how do you make your lift arms raise??????? Are you activating this lever on the added-on valve and then the arms lift up??

Problem Solved!!!! The hose was hooked to the disconnect on the right. So I unplugged it and just plugged in to the middle disconnect, just to keep it clean and it works perfect! Thanks so much to everyone for their time and effort!!
