on my deck, one of the adjusting handles actually moves freely when i'm mowing, the spring appears to be intact but i have not disassembled it. do you guys think it's the spring or something else?

are you referring to the adjusting handles for the rear rollers? If so, there is no spring for them. Can you clarify or give a picture of what you are looking at?

yes the height adjusting handles. what is the function of the spring on the shift under the t-handle?

The spring is there to hold tension on adjusting screw. Vibration of deck will turn them with tension over time. If spring is weak, adjust it where you like, put a jamb nut on bottom. That will fix the problem. HTH Tracy

Looking at the parts diagram for the rollers and T handles - no springs anywhere. It does show a jam nut though. Can't get the picture to display here. Here is a picture of mine...

There were two styles of adjustments on those. I have both kinds. My unmolested pristine deck has springs, the others don't. I think the lenght of tube was shorter on the ones with springs. HTH Tracy

Another one of those little items that are overlooked. These Tractors have so many little subtle differences, it makes ya scratch yer' head till yer' bald! If it ain't wiring, its switches, or routing. Now its mower decks. Sheesh! And, btw, the center of my head is getting pretty shiny up there.... LOL!
