 Topic: Old Chevy truck questions

I’m looking at a 1951 Chevy 3/4 ton. It has a factory looking flat/stake bed. It has very long running boards that don’t look right. Did they make short running boards also like a 2 ton truck would have had. Would running boards off of a 2 ton work and look somewhat correct?
Not saying I’m gonna buy it but I sure been thinking about it. I’ve been trying to buy a one ton from my neighbor for a long time. He’s never gonna sell. This one is really neat. It doesn’t have dual wheels but still very neat.

Hey Thad,,,,what a co-incidence,,,!! I stopped to look at another trk up in Ruidoso, NM a couple of weeks ago, and spotted one like you talk about while I was there. I would of been real interested if it had been the 5 window model,,,,but it wasn't,,,,!!! But am pretty sure it was a 1 ton. The dude was not home so I'm gonna stop next time I have to take the wife back up to the clinic. I'll try to get more info and maybe borry ole Shameless's phone to get some pics,,,,,,,,

This one most likely started life as a long bed step side. It has step side running boards. I know I could cut these off but I think one ton or 2 ton running boards would fit and look correct. I assume the cab and doors are the same with the 2 ton having larger fender wells.

I had a 49 & a 51 Thad. They both had a 216 cu engine in em. The 49 had real low gears in it so it was a puller. The 51 was a real dog!!

What were they Ted? 1/2 ton 3/4 ton? I drove a 1 ton that was very low gears. This one has sat in a pasture for years and years but glass is good and no rust. 4 speed 216. I kind of like the idea of the 3/4 ton over the one ton due to tire and wheel options. I’m also assuming modern GM 8 hole steel wheels would fit this truck.

dad's '51 had the running boards that went from the rear of the front fenders all the way back to the front of the rear fenders, it was a long box step side 3/4 ton. had the 292 6 banger in it with the 4 spd. was a great truck cept don't lean agin the passenger door when turning left.

That is an option as well. I’ve done similar. I made one good set of WC fenders out of two pair. I see more old 2 tons laying around than pu’s I might be able to find cab length.

There was a 51 or 52 Chevy 3/4 or 1 ton down around the corner years back on one of the farms that's right next to us. That particular truck was a rack body and it had long running boards on it. Unfortunately, Mother Nature is very harsh on sheetmetal, and the cab was rotting down over the frame. Looked like a "low rider". They cleaned up the farm a couple years back and that was one of the items that got dragged out and hauled away for scrap. I never went down to the farm to look at it, but it was close enough to the road to see what it was equipped with. Neat truck!! Had a nice grille in it for a farm truck!.... Would've made a cool hotrod truck! BTW, that one had dual wheels out back also!

One of my older bros. restored a '51 3/4 ton GMC that he bought in Las Vegas. An old forestry trk. and like others have said, geared in the basement. Some of the things he did: Changed the engine to a 455 Pontiac which he gave the works. Kept the four speed and the big rear end, but added a three speed Brown-Lipe overdrive auxiliary. Would then cruise at seventy and believe it or not got good gas mileage. It was a sharp trk. He's gone now but before he passed away he gave it to his son. He lives in Pleasant Hill, Mo, so if you happen to be thru. there and happen to see it, nephew will be glad to talk to you.

Are you mistaken or did someone install 292's in the old trucks. 261 was the big dog back then.

292 came out IIRC '62 or '63. GMC had a 301/302? in the ton and half and two tons but only for a few years.

What was the first with inserts instead of Babbitt? Do they look the same as the old 216 Babbitt beaters?

Thad, the 49 was a 3/4 and the 51 was a half ton
